WWYD car seats?

Before I start, we have already made our decision, just interested to see if the mn community agrees or disagrees.

It's a simple one, DD is 10.5 months and is 8.90 kg, next stage car seat is from 9kg up, she meets every other criteria, sitting etc.

So, would you leave her in rear facing car seat that is unsuitable after 11kg or move her into forward facing at 8.9 kg

Don't understand the question.

Why would you move her to a seat that's too big for her?

Am I missing something?

vodkaanddietirnbru · 31/07/2012 16:42

you can get extended rear facing seats (up to about age 4) if you can find one to fit your car

Pascha · 31/07/2012 16:42

Leave her rearfacing until she exceeds the weight limit or the top of her head is above the seat. Leave her rearfacing as long as possible.

Leave her RF as long as you possibly can.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 31/07/2012 16:43

p.s. I would leave her in her current seat until she is too heavy for it or her head is over the edge of the backrest

thisisyesterday · 31/07/2012 16:45

I would leave her rear-facing for as long as possible because it's safer

BertieBotts · 31/07/2012 16:48

Leave her rear facing until she gets to 11kg if possible.

Otherwise, as soon as her head reaches the top of the seat, but she must be 9kg at least. If she's 10 months it won't take long for her to gain that extra 100g so I'd definitely hold out for that.

OddBoots · 31/07/2012 16:50

Leave her as long as possible/allowable then if possible/affordable get a bigger rear-facing.

Woodyhels · 31/07/2012 17:03

Mydogs, this is sparked by 6 people (2 of which working with kids) that 100gms doesn't matter so move her over, I just wondered how many other people thought like that.

We agree with the mn consensus to keep her rear facing as long as possible btw!

Good for you OP Smile

Some people baffle me!

Pascha · 31/07/2012 17:40

Excellent. It amazes me how some people are in so much of a rush to get to the next stage.

LittleSugaPlum · 31/07/2012 19:18

When i brought my first born car seat at mothercare, the woman in the store told me that you move up to the next stage car seat when they reach 9kg OR the top of the head is over the top of the car seat. If none of these have been reached then they arent ready for the next stage.

SchrodingersMew · 31/07/2012 19:37

I have DS (10 months) in a forward facing seat, he has been in that since around 7 months when he had out grown the rear facing seat but the last time we had him weighed was at 8 months and he was 11.5 kg.

I would wait until she actually is too big for the seat.

Wingdingdong · 31/07/2012 23:26

In theory I'd say RF as long as possible. However, we moved DD before she'd outgrown her infant seat (it was to 13kg rather than 11 - it was after her first birthday and she was well over the min limit for the next stage seat, so no safety issues - and she's not yet 13kg at 3yo!). The reason we changed her rather than leaving her in the seat we'd deliberately bought to have her RF as long as possible was because she had severe reflux and it was exacerbated by the pressure on her abdomen caused by the angle of the infant seat, probably also some motion sickness caused by RF. We frequently had to pull over because she was choking on vomit - final straw was 3 times on the motorway between services. She was still sick after changing seats but nowhere near as badly and she didn't choke on it - plus I could see her/clean up more easily.

DS is just 5m and weighed 9kg a month ago, with his head approaching the top of the seat. There's no way I'm ready to put him in the next stage car seat though.
