My son has developed a sort of phobia of having his hair cut, anyone else..?

The first time he went when he was 18 months or so, the hairdresser sprayed him with the water mist and it freaked him out. There were lots of tears, and ever since he gets hysterical if we go.

I have not been for months and his hair is in a dreadful state. I don't know whether to just let it grow, or if there is a kind way of dealing with it. It seems the more we try the more frightened he gets.

The other day he let me comb it and i pretended to do one snip and he was fine, but the next time i suggested it he bombed off screaming again Sad

My son has always hated it. So I bought myself a pair of clippers and just hold him down and do it. Just did it this morning, in fact. He screamed the whole time, although he started out being very brave (he's 3.1) and saying 'need haircut, yes' as soon as the clippers went on he went ballistic.

Mine was hysterical with anything but clippers and then would still not like it so he had a number 1 every six months for years.

I did slowly manage to introduce scissors safely at home, letting him see and safely touch the scissors, role play a naff teddy having a hair cut which ds did about 7/8years.

He prefered one male barber have no idea why over anyone else although we have now moved so it's back to me

Very tiring, you have my sympathies!

Is it just the water with your DS?

Let it grow. I think little boys look much nicer with longer hair.

We had to resort to clippers at home, with pingu on the tv and a biscuit! Are there any mobile hairdressers who could come to your house and do it, it might help?

MoongirlsCat · 29/07/2012 17:02

At aged 2.5 my son had a really unpleasant experience with a hairdresser. Nothing dramatic; she just made it very clear that she didn't like children.

He's declined a hair cunt since. He's now 9 and his hair is longer than mine. I just roll with it. It does suit him.

Moongirl Did you mean hair cut? Grin

My DS was petrified, he just developed the fear after years of having it clippered. I took him to the Barbers with the car they sit and DVD's.

Now do it at home and he sits nervously but at least I can do it now!

moongirlscat i think that is what my son would call a hair cut if he could Grin

natural i think it started with the water and then it became the whole thing.

derekthehamster my mobile hairdresser is very reluctant in case she hurts him, i think that her insurance only covers them after a certain age too, although she might just have said that in panic.

Oh Charlottewasboth thank you for saying that, I know its only a hair cut, but we are having similar problems with potty training, he seems to get mental block and be all suspicious about anything new. I was a bit tearful today about it all (sounds dramatic, but he was crying and I felt like an evil bastard for making him cry, and my family and friends all think he is soft )

Saying this too will pass has given me some MN strength and put it into perspective - thanks.
