Ideas for this week holiday - no money

Im hoping someone can advise. My other half has an unexpected week off, the sun is shining, we have fuel in the car but no money to spend at all - we seriously have less than a tenner so I can't even make up picnics. :(

Any ideas?

Depends where you are. Loads of free stuff should be on at the moment, festivals, free museums, etc
Have a google on free days out and see what you can go and see

Lonelylou · 23/07/2012 08:57

Do you have kids or is it just you and your OH?

How about walks with a point; geocaching. Just heard of it.
get the kids paints out and a roll of old wallpaper and do footprint painting...can be hilarious if you all join in.
Rummage through a room and find things you'd forgotten about and use them.
Take something from home that you can hand hold and use that for lunch..and eek out your tenner on a nice coffee in a cheapie cafe.
Treasure hunts.
Free local museums.
A day agt the local beach/park

Not really knowing you family situation here but trying to help.

Sorry! It's me, the man and the daughter Smile she is 4. We live an hour from the coast so we can do that but no packed lunch or restaurant option which makes it awkward.

What would you be cooking for lunch? If it's sausage you could have that cold in a sandwich for example.

OlymPicture · 23/07/2012 09:55

YY modify lunch plans to take with you.

FireOverBabylon · 23/07/2012 10:08

OP what food do you already have in your cupboard? If you have plain flour, for example, you can make some flat bread to go with ham, cheese spread, humous (have you any chick peas to make this if you haven't got it in the fridge?)

As a child, we always used to go to the zoo with cold hamburger sandwiches. DH heaves at the thought, but cold hamburger and onion sandwiches are much better than they sound!

let us know what's in your store cupboards, and I'm sure the collective brains of MN can suggest some picnic ideas. Also whereabouts are you, roughly, in case anyone is local and knows some free day out options.

Looks like it's the beach. We don't really have enough food in that's another problem, jam sandwiches it is!

Fire fabulous advice thank you. I think today is taken care of. I'll fill a big 2l bottle with made up squash for the car.

I have to get sorted now so can't hang around.

We do have half a tin of chickpeas which I could make a hummus from - I'm the only one who likes it but that'll be me sorted! I'll do that tonight. Excellent.

Pretty much everything we have is taken by dinners, I did an inventory yesterday and we need everything for the next 3/4 night time meals and they're not extravagant (ie toad in the hole and baked beans!).

visit different parks and playgrounds.

Chalk designs on the patio/ pavement. wet footprint patterns on ditto.
Garden football / Olympics

Making christmas cards - assuming you have some craft type stuff in stock.

Museums or galleries are usually free, parks with packed lunches, you could have a really cheap picnic for less than £10 (value and economy products) for example you could buy some cordial for less than £1 and a liter of value fizzy water then you have a liter of refreshing squash, and you could buy some cheap cous cous and veggies, hard boiled eggs that kind of stuff.

GrassIsntGreener · 24/07/2012 10:36

Well yesterday we had a lovely day at the seaside, two seasides actually - a loooong day in the hot sun!

We did get lots of cheap bread/ham etc so took sarnies and a 2l bottle with made up squash. Luckily because we asked dd's grandparents they were kind and paid for some things too.

Chill day today we're all exhausted!

Ha! Never thought of taking the grandparents and letting them spoil you Grin Loved that one!

Glad you had a good day.

sashh · 24/07/2012 12:44

If you ahve some fish you can make foil parcels, put them in the engine - not the actual engine obviously - but under the hood and attached to something.

Actually you could do this with new potaotes or a few other things, then when you get to the coast you have warm food.

Oh you have already been - OK well try that next time.
