How many of your toddlers have fallen downstairs?

That's it really, curious to know after someone remarked to me "it's more common than you think" the other day.

I'm asking because my 20 mo DS fell downstairs on Tuesday - right from the top to the bottom - and i felt like an terrible, terrible mother. He's just got to the age where he likes to climb/ come downstairs on his own (when i say "on his own" i mean with hand holding help). I opened stairgate and was momentarily distracted when i turned to pick up a glass from the cabinet at the top of the stairs. When i turned back to take DS's hand, he was looking at me and not where he was going so as he reached out for the bannister he missed an toppled forward.

Everything seemed to move in slow motion, but I knew pretty much as soon as he got to the bottom that he was absolutely fine (just shocked), although cue lots of tears and guilt from me. Within 5 mins he was running around giggling and being silly, much to my immense relief. I still called the GP who was fairly relaxed about it as long as he didn't seem particularly subdued.

So anyway, am i a terrible mother or is it more common than people admit to?

Both. Just once each. They were both fine.

And probably at approx 3yo each time. Too big and confident for stair gates but still not quite paying attention all the time.

DS1 (then 3.4) decided last summer that dressing in his Buzz Ligthyear suit gave him the power to fly and tested it from the top of our very steep stairs. He was wrong. Luckily, he'd shut the stairgate at the bottom and, despite landing on his head with his legs up the wall, I think the stairgate took the energy out of his fall and didn't even get a bruise. I held him there for a couple of minutes due to he position in which he landed, whilst contemplating ringing an ambulance. My mum told us not to and on that occasion she was right. In hindsight, I probably should have, as I do now know of a child that died falling from the top of a flight of stairs. I still thank my lucky stars that he was fine. We've all been lucky on here and should take the above as a warning to be as careful as we can, whilst knowing that we are all human.

My 2 year old falls down the stairs at this 2 times a month.

He falls out of bed at least once a week.

He falls over his feet everyday.

It's the only thing he got from me Grin

my son just now, he likes to go down on his knees backwards, i didn't think to go behind him (I was stood in front) and he rolled down the stairs I was worried I had reacted to slow, but he cried, and has been fine ever since playing and eating as normal, I feel awful, but its nice to know i'm not alone :) xx

Why on earth did you need to resurrect this thread @rainbowraybaby? It's 10 years old! How did you even find it? Confused

My 3 year old fell today from top to bottom bounced head first which appeared to turn in to a cart wheel and hit her head on the wall at the bottom. Usually she goes down on her bottom its safer.. I felt so helpless and god the guilt I been feeling since. I have never got such a fright in all my life! This parent stuff is not for the faint hearted! 😳

Dunno why someone would remark on something being an old thread irrespective of the age of the original post ... whennyoubgo thru something traumatic you look for comfort in other people's experiences be it last week or 20years ago..... I don't get why its an issue? Surely yes years pass but I'm guessing if your on here in first place you know the anxiety felt
