My ds is 20 months now and still has a bottle included in his night time routine .
He doesnt drink much milk in the day although i offer it reguarly and give him lots of dairy products .
Is it bad that he still has this and .. why??

I keep the bottle because he drinks it all ( 200 mls ) so i know that he is at least getting that amount of calcium a day i also like the cuddles and bonding that goes with it and in concludes his routine at night although he doesnt fall asleep while drinking it and is always awake when i place him in his cot !

Bottles aren't recommended after 12 months, something to do with tooth development I believe?
Not an expert though I'm afraid, that's all I remember from the HV.

just change it to a cup? How long are you going to give him a bottle for? Does he drink from a cup in the day time?

One at night time isn't going to hurt him, but I'd switch to a cup.

Blimey, it won't hurt if he enjoys it and it calms him!

My dd had a night time bottle until she was 4 Blush. Of course it wasn't ideal but it calmed her and got her ready for sleep. She used a cup every other time and the bottle did no harm at all to her teeth. Lighten up! [sink]

Oops Blush double post AND a random comment at the end. That was supposed to be Wink. 'Sink' makes NO sense.

he does drink from a cup in the day at meal times but only little sips , and drinks from a sports cap tipe bottle that i have dotted around the house and in changing bag for drinks here and there
... he would never drink that much milk from a cup.

Baby Goo doesn't drink a lot of milk, but I'm not worried about it, like yours, she has yoghurt, cheese etc.

ONe thing to think about is that you won't want him to drink loads art bedtime when you are toilet training, so eventually you will cut it out anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it.

For what its worth: my son is 26 months and still has a bottle in the morning and the evening... He drinks them so fast that I can't beleive the sucking is bad for his teeth, and we always brush teeth after the bottle. He drinks loads during the day from beakers, cups with straws, sports top bottles and even normal plastic glasses (although not unsupervised as he does love tipping the liquid out everywhere).

I hadn't thought about stopping this before toilet training but that makes sense. I am not in any hurry to stop otherwise.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 20/07/2012 11:26

Blimey, it's fine! As long as most of the time he has a cup, then a bottle at bedtime won't do any harm (presumably you're brushing teeth afterwards anyway?)

DS still has milk in the evenings and he's almost 5.. (he has it in one of these )

Another one with a dc still on a bedtime bottle at 27 mo she enjoys it and it's good for her so I'm not stopping it. My DD does have a special dietary requirement that means calcium is super important. She drinks water or juice through the day from a normal cup but takes a full 8 oz in a bottle before bed. Also my hv said if it's just the one bottle as part of her bedtime routine not to worry about it. She is now dry on the day and has a nappy at night I will likely stop the bottle when go dry at night although she does sometimes get up dry and have a wee when her nappy is taken off even after having had a bottle

My DS is 2.2 and still has bedtime bottle. He drinks out of a cup in the day but won't drink milk out of a cup (although tbh i prob haven't tried him with this for nearly a year maybe time to try again). People seem to make a big deal about not having bottles after 12 months, our surestart centre had some event where they could go and give bottles to the bottle fairy! My motto is 'why make life any harder than it need be', and i'm not really bothered if DS has a bottle till he's 5 (or even older). I remember my little cousins having bottles till they were around 4 or 5. One has just graduated as a doctor, the other is studying to be a vet, they are lovely looking girls with perfect teeth, it has done them no harm whatsoever

gobbledegook1 · 22/07/2012 12:49

My DS is 3.4 and still has a small bottle at bedtime and one if he wakes up in the night, he will not settle without one and trying to make him go without just ends up in hours of hysterics and constant asking and isn't worth the hassle. He drinks out of a normal cup the rest of the time, I believe he'll stop when he feels ready. Ref toilet training it hasn't hindered him and he has been dry day and night since he was 2 1/2.

Megalosaurus · 22/07/2012 14:11

Just switch to a cup and don't make a big deal of it. Mine all had finished with bottles by 18months max. None of them made any fuss. My 2.8 year old has a beaker of warm milk at bedtime still so the routine is still there just in a more age-appropriate cup.
