Bunk beds???

My DS' (almost 5 and 2 1/2) have been driving me mad to share a room. They get on really well and DS1 is a brilliant sleeper, DS2not so good :/.

Anyway, I think sharing a room would be good for them, my two older brothers did and they have always been close.

I am now debating two things; A- are they too young? Is it a bad idea?
B- should they have bunk beds (DS1 is desparate!).

Any advice?

my 2 are in bunkbeds. Bigun on top is 6yo; littl'un on the bottom is 18 months. Strangely dd2 has never tried to climb up the ladder to get to the top, which is what i was worried about. Theyve only been in them a month, so there is still time....i bought ones that will split into 2 seperate beds just in case i needed them at ground level until dd2 was older-but so far so good

they have both slept better since they have been in the bunks too. if dd2 wakes and cant settle, she just comes and gets into bed with me....dont know if that would work for you

i loved sharing with my sister when i was a kid and we had bunks, which is probably why i got bunks for mine. they seem to love it. and each other actually, havent had any squabbling at all yet over toys etc etc

prior to this dd1 was in a mid sleeper for 1 1/2 yrs...i think its fine isnt it? dont know what recommended age is for high beds?

sagenod · 16/07/2012 03:21

I think the recommended age for bunk beds is 6. I have a 4.7 yo and a 19mo and they have had bunk beds for about 3 months now due to space issues. It is fine. DS2 has tried to climb the ladder but is way to small to do it. DS1 has never fallen out, when he has friends over etc they are NOT ALLOWED to play on the top bunk just in case they fall.

DS1 isn't the reckless type though. I depends on the indvidual child I guess.

I hope they're not too young...I have just ordered bunk bed cots for my 2yo and newborn should be fun! Grin

Would love to get bunks for my 2 boys, I want ones that could split into single beds in the future too, where have you all got yours from?

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 18/07/2012 10:23

I have seen these on the John Lewis website that can be used either as bunkbeds or singles - reviews seem pretty good.

bunkbeds

JKSLtd · 19/07/2012 12:05

Thanks Pepper - they look good, I'd love to be able to see some in RL before ordering but not many places/nowhere really seems to display them.

Sparklingbrook · 19/07/2012 12:07

Our two had bunks and now they are split into two. The top bunk was a right pain when it came to changing the sheets etc. Grin

JKSLtd · 19/07/2012 12:11

Hmm I think that would annoy me too, but they'll probably only be in them for a relatively short space of time I think & DS1 could always help, right? Hmm Grin

DS1 is convinced he wants a set with a slide after seeing one once - though what he saw was only a high-sleeper (i think?) without a proper 2nd lower bed, in theory we have the room for a slide, though it kind of defeats the object of getting more floor space in the first place, has anyone seen a set of proper bunks with a slide?

Sparklingbrook · 19/07/2012 12:14

We had one similar to this. It's two single beds at the moment.

FireOverBabylon · 19/07/2012 12:21

You cqan get a few bunk beds with a slide but they are £££. Another link suggests adding the slide yourself, wehich may be cheaper.

Sparklingbrook · 19/07/2012 12:24

I'm not sure about slides. Do you think it would be a novelty for about a week?

FireOverBabylon · 19/07/2012 12:24

I've just re-read my post. Blush at the typos. Sorry about that.....

hihohiho · 19/07/2012 12:29

Mine share at 2 and 4 - DD is always to be found in ds midi bed so I'm going to get them bunks for Christmas - they will love them.

There is an eBay seller that does amazing beds.

I'll find a link - they also have their own website and prices differ between the two.

JKSLtd · 19/07/2012 13:21

I saw those Woodland ones, what fun! but yes a tad too ££ for me, and DH would never agree!

I think adding one later might be the best idea - though the stage of drilling into the floor to anchor it worries me. We have a climbing frame with slide in the garden so i could probably put DS1 off by saying he can use that Grin

Off to look at the ebay one.
