At what age should children stop doing this?

Just out of interest, at what age is children seen as too old to be calling their parents "Mummy and Daddy?"

My husbands two children aged 8 and 10 still call their parents mummy and daddy.

I was just wondering should they have grown out of this by now, im sure i was calling my parents mum and dad from the age of 5ish.

DS at six calls me mum or mummy depending whether he remembers to be grown up or not (ditto a kiss good bye in the playground!)

Didn't Prince Charles call HM "Mummy" in his speech at the Jubilee concert? (And in that programme by Alan Titchmarsh(sp) ?). He is over 60 I think.

My kids call us by our first names, and have done for years. It doesn't bother us and they do use it interchangably with mummy, mum, daddy and dad.

My 15 year old always uses mum and dad I think; the 14 year old, 11 year old and the 9 year old all use mum/dad, mummy/daddy or mumma/dadda randomly and it doesn't seem to matter whether their friends are around or not.

GhouliaYelps · 14/07/2012 21:48

DD calls me Mama I love it

Chubfuddler · 14/07/2012 21:49

The queen still called her mother mummy when she was 76.

Does anyone actually spend time fretting about this? Really?

choccyp1g · 14/07/2012 21:51

My 11 year old calls me Mummy sometime, and I'll be very sad when he stops.

As far as I'm concerned it's just a pet name for the person who is your mother, no different from Mam or Mater, or Mom, or Mommy.

choccyp1g · 14/07/2012 21:52

Should say "if he stops" rather than when, it woud be find by me to still be "mummy" in my 90s

AxlRosesLeatherTrousers · 14/07/2012 21:54

Both still call us mummy and daddy for now. ALthough dd2 is only 5, dd1 is 9 but I think it's mostly habit for her now. She will call us mum and dad a lot, but I think sometimes she forgets to be cool and says mummy and daddy. Grin

It's fine for an 8 year old to watch Peppa. Im 39 and I like Max and Ruby.

Springforward · 14/07/2012 22:08

3yo DS uses both, he chooses. We tend to say mum/ dad when referring to each other when we speak to him, though.

2tired2bewitty · 14/07/2012 22:10

My 65 year old father calls his 93 year old mother mummy, I (31) call my mum maman ( teen affectation which stuck) and dd (2.5) sometimes calls dh by his first name.

I am quite fond of Ben and Holly.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved · 14/07/2012 22:19

Hum, don't want to be the grumpy poster, but it sounds like you think
your dh's children should 'grow up'? I wonder why that is?

jubilee10 · 14/07/2012 22:43

Ds1 (17) calls me mummy but says dad. Ds2 (14) says mum and dad. Ds3 (6) says mum and dad, mummy and daddy or mumma and dadda depending on his mood. It doesn't matter, we all know who we are!

olympickibucket · 14/07/2012 22:45

Still call my mother Mummy. And I'm 47.

mumofjust1 · 14/07/2012 22:46

Dd calls me mum and has done since she was about 6.

She only ever calls me mummy when she's whining as she knows it winds me up!

I sometimes call my mum mummy - only if I'm mucking about though :)

mumofjust1 · 14/07/2012 22:47

The whining winds me up, not dd calling me mummy! I don't mind it at all :)

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 14/07/2012 22:55

dd 6 calls me mama or mum, she has never really used mummy.

I used mum or mummy through out my mums life even when i was in my 20's.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/07/2012 22:57

Still have a mummy at 40. No plans to give it up.

seeker · 14/07/2012 22:59

Why does it bother you?

seeker · 14/07/2012 23:03

Don't worry, op, they'll grow up and be off your hands soon enough.

mumeeee · 15/07/2012 16:24

DD1 and DD2 called us Mummy and Daddy well into their teens. Both she and DD2 will sometimes still call us Mummy and Daddy and they are 25 and 22 but it's a jokey thing now. DD3 called us Mum from about 5 and would never call us Mummy and Daddy even in a jokey way.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 15/07/2012 16:25

My son is 2 and never says mummy. I'm just mum or "mum mum" he says daddy though.

exoticfruits · 15/07/2012 16:40

Whenever they choose-which may be never.

saintlyjimjams · 15/07/2012 16:43

My 13 year old calls me mummy (he can't say mum - in fact mummy is the only word he can say), my 10 year old calls me mum or mummy and my 7 year old calls me mater (don't ask).
