hi, I took DS to the optician to check his eyes today, just to be sure that he can see well before he starts Reception in September. He will be 4 at the end of July. I was shortsighted myself as a child and wore glasses from the age of 9. The optician said that he has good vision now but it was a lot closer to 20 20 vision than most 3 year olds (apparently they are much more long sighted when young and the eyes naturally gravitate towards 20 20 as they get older). Anyway, she said i should bring him back next year as his eyes might shift towards short sighted in the next couple of years. I don't want to worry unecessarily but has anyone had any experience of this? I wonder how likely it is he will need glasses, or might his eyes just stay as they are? Any similar experiences or advice would be appreciated.

I am pants & just say "Oh is it good enough they don't need glasses?" and then forget to take them again for 4-5 yrs. This system works so far. :)

I think an anual check is a good idea, a child doesn't know they see things differently.

I have needed glasses since birth (astigmatism) but only got them after complaining for two years I couldn't see the board at school properly.

Is it a big deal if his eyes change?

Glasses are not the end of the world, ds has worn glasses since he turned 2. He needs a patch too. It may not even be an issue yet, wait and watch how he develops. With ds, it was obvious as he has a lazy eye.

My dd was the same, op. She finally needed to wear glasses when she was 10. Why is this a worry for you?

We were told that if both parents wore glasses before the age of 10, then the chances are their children will too. This is certainly true in our family at least.

And even if not. I didn't need glasses till my early twenties and dh has 20/20 vision. Poor ds can't see very much at all in one eye!
