Totsbots Bamboo - Can they be rescued or have we killed them?

We bought a birth to potty set of Totsbots just under a year ago when our DD was outgrowing the borrowed size 1s we had from a friend. We chose the bamboo ones because they were so soft and my DH and I both have awful skin so we thought that might help. They were great until a few of months ago when DD started getting horrible rash which gets infected easily. She has been teething which was originally what we thought was the problem but after a bout of rash that needed steroids to clear up we realised that her nappies stank of ammonia.

We approached Totbots for help and advice who just said it wasn't their problem but that of the company we bought them from. We contacted the seller and they said it was our fault for using napisan.

So we have tried soaking and repeated washing with no detergent but they still smell of ammonia as soon as they get damp. We've put DD in disposables when her rash has been really bad and once it clears putting her back into cloth and the rash comes back quickly.

DD is a very active 14 month old who never stops walking/climbing around and she's now starting to get sore spots on her legs where the nappy is rubbing.

Any advice before I give up and hope that she potty trains sooner rather than later?

Have you tried strip washing them? Other people will give you clear instructions, but basically washing with no detergent until no bubbles, then using either vinegar or a dishwasher tablet. Google will give you better instruction s than me! You MIT have a detergent build up? Are you using half dose of detergent?

Once you've stripped them back to new non stinky nappies, rinsing them before every wash really helps. A cold rinse cycle in the washing machine will get rid of a lot of the wee. When the wee comes in contact with washing powder, it can cause a reaction.

Thanks - I think it's time to attack with vinegar and see how we get on!
