Would anyone mind reminding me what I need for a newborn please?

Could do with at least starting to think about it, but it's a very different kettle of fish this time round - last time I thought about what I needed more or less non stop, but with 17mo dd I don't have that luxury!

So, I need to get the moses basket out, and I guess buy a new mattress? Small nappies and babygrows etc, anything else?

Help! :)

  • Nappies
  • Cotton wool/wipes
  • Pram and car seat (although I guess you have them from DD1?)
  • Dig out the vests/babygrows blankets
  • Steriliser if planning to FF

I would get a new mattress for the Moses basket.

A sling may be useful so you can hold baby and run around after your DD

Well for us ds2 was really cheap to sort out. I had bought LOADS for ds1 and soon figured out most of it was useless.

Here was our list.

A few hundred vests and Babygrows.
A cardigan x2
A hat x2
Socks
(All from ds1)
Muslins (from ds1)
Nappies and wipes (Cloth, from ds1)
A car seat (from ds1)

The only things we actually bought were:

A double pram (ds1 was 17 months when ds2 was born)
& a new sling (just because)

We co-slept so didn't bother with a cot and BF so no need for bottles etc, but obviously cot and bottles need adding to the list if you plan to use them.

didn't bother with new mattresses, just new vests and babygros as the old ones looked all grey and over-worn. Clean muslins are nice too. Cotton pads, small nappies. Thats about it .

A sling!

ZuleikaD · 13/07/2012 08:41

I second Iggly - a sling's essential for a newborn plus toddler setup.

KDK12 · 13/07/2012 15:13

i third the sling, I had a moby wrap with my first son that i barely used, but i'm hardly out of it with my 2nd! he has most of his daytime naps in there.

ZhenThereWereTwo · 13/07/2012 15:26

Fourth on the sling, save on money by buying from here or here just as good as Moby (I have Joy and Joe one).

Double buggy - even with a 3 year old I still have to put her in the buggy sometimes (baby goes in sling) and I also have a buggy board. With a 17 month old you will need a double buggy.

Keep the same mattress so long as it is not damaged.

Car seat

Vests, sleepsuits, hats, cardigans, all in one snugglesuit.

Mobile for entertaining baby whilst you run after potty training toddler.

Playmat/baby gym.

Safe place to put baby in living area that toddler cannot pull over or easily get into such as a travel cot with bassinet or playpen with mesh sides to stop small toys being presented to baby.

Bouncy chair to put baby in whilst you are in kitchen as you cannot use sling whilst cooking and they are always happier when they can see you.

Baby monitor for living area so if you have to leave the room you can hear what toddler is doing.

New toys/nice books or something for toddler to do whilst you breastfeed.

Somebody should invent a baby-hammock arrangement that you can hang from a doorframe out of a toddler's reach. DD used to use the time when I was cooking to see if DS came to pieces.
