really stupid question but whats the difference? does it matter?

MIL has just given me the secret to how she gets DS off with no trouble johnstones baby bedtime bath... so i'm going to start using it too atm i used top to toe bath then moisturising baby lotion (yellow cap), I've had a look in my box and we have bedtime oil and lotion so what do i use?

I used the bath and oil tonight and he went off no bother.

I'd say neither, go for something natural/organic with lavender in to help him sleep Smile

You don't need either. When DD had a bit of dry skin I just used aqueous cream.

My hv said to me that that lotion is water based and cream is oil based and much more moisturising. I think lotion is pointless personally, and like the others say I wouldnt use any johnsons stuff its awfull. I would suggest you go to waitrose and pick something organic and use only a little so that it doesnt cost a fortune if you feel you need to use something. But yes before your baby is about 4/5 months old I wouldnt use anything but water.

ZuleikaD · 12/07/2012 09:17

Natzer your hv doesn't know her chemistry! Both lotions and creams are emulsions of oil and water - lotion's just a bit more watery than cream.

Personally I would not use detergents to strip the oil from a baby's skin and then attempt to replace those natural emollients with more chemicals - all your baby needs in his bath is water. No lotion, cream or oil is the 'secret' to a baby's sleep. I also agree with those who won't use Johnson's, it's got far too much perfume in it.

My paediatrician recommended calendula oil as being good for everything -moisturising, nappy rash, relaxing. Wouldn't put any in the bath though - just use it afterwards as water dries the skin.

I imagine it is the massaging effect of rubbing in the lotion and the lavender and calendula in the lotion that is helping hum relax, so why not do some massage with lavender and calendula oils? Johnson's products have never done my babies' skin any favours.

I didn't think that the bedtime bath had any real lavender in it, just lavender fragrance which isn't going to have the same "sleepy" effect as the lavender essential oil.

With regards to moisturising, you are best going for a natural product, my favourite is waitrose baby massage oil, pure coconut oil with vanilla, smells lovely and it makes the skin so soft and not slippery or greasy like mineral baby oil.
