DS has saved up over £200 and desperately wants a phone. He's 10.
I don't know what to do. He is only 10, but has saved hard for this.
Is there a suitable pay as you go type thing? I got a bit confused looking on the phone web sites (am getting old obviously!).

depends on what he is going to be using the phone for. Personally i would recommend giff gaff, £10 per month gives unlimited internet (if your son has a smart phone he can go on you tube etc) and unlimited text. You also get 250 mins i think for calls as well. This is what my son (11) has.

Is it only iPhones that do face time?
I want him to be able to text/call me if the school bus is late (or if he misses the bus!).
I guess he'll want the internet/games and maybe texting friends??
I confess to not having heard if Giff Gaff. Will go and google it now.
Thanks

I have an I phone. Got the cheapest possible deal. Got the phone unlocked for £15 through t mobile-that's the legal way to unlock the phone. Put a guff gaff sim card in.

Free sim card.
Pay £10 a month.
Get unlimited texts and web browsing and 250 minutes free.
Top up on the Internet. And can set it up to go out of a bank once a month so no messing.

But giff gaff could go in any phone. Does he have one in mind?

Is it the sim card that gives you a number?

At aged 10, I'd get a basic Nokia - O2 are selling a phone for £14.99 - PAYG, pay £10 a month for unlimited texts. Leave the fancy phones until he's older

MotionOfTheOcean · 11/07/2012 22:14

If you want to use giffgaff.com/index/offer/,the phone has to be unlocked or on o2.With the whole family being on this we save about £30 a month on mobile phone bills, giffgaff to giffgaff calls and texts are free,so saves the landline bill as well.

LemonBreeland · 11/07/2012 22:21

I agree with hopenglory that for his first phone get hime something simple on PAYG. Even if it is just until he is used to the responsibility of taking care of it.

Alsot hink about your 10 yo having access to the internet unsupervised.

Just wanted to say that if you do let your ds have an I phone, book an appointment with the apple store for the day you get the phone.

The store near me needs notice a couple of days on advance for an appointment. I phones need setting up via a computer and they will sort all that for you. For free of course.

1805 · 11/07/2012 23:27

Can they get on the internet as and when they want to, or do they have to be in someones house and know their password?
I'm just realising how ignorant I am .

I'm guessing with £200 he's after a smart phone. Said I'll talk to him about it tomorrow.

the Samsung galaxy ace is good starter smart phone does pretty much all of the stuff that a more expensive phone does but costs less than £150.

It doesn't have facetime but your son can use good old fashioned voice calls if he needs you.

With internet they can access when and where they want as it uses phone data not wireless network so I'm not really sure what you can do about that as I don't think phones have parental controls.

LemonBreeland · 12/07/2012 09:04

If you have 3G where you live he will be able to access the internet any time.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 12/07/2012 09:17

With giff gaff he can get Internet anywhere for free using 3G that's already on the phone.

With some tariffs you only get x amount of web browsing and downloads before you're charged for it.

But with giff gaff it's included in the £10 a month

bunjies · 12/07/2012 09:24

I also recommend giff gaff if your ds wants a smart phone because if the unlimited data but even though it's not a contract you do have to top up online. You can't do it in shops, the cas point etc. Be prepared to either do it every month or set up a standing order. I do think 10 is young for a smart phone [old git emoticon]. I made ds wait til he was 13.
