Posted this in Chat too but
Ds is 4.6 and is starting reception in September. He is really big compared to his peers. He is 114cm tall and weighs 21.2kg. This puts his on the 91st centile - I don't know what his BMI centile is but his bmi 16.3 so not sure if he is overweight but he looks lean but stocky. He eats well but I am not that strict on the sweet/crisps front but he gets a lot of exercise and park time. Am really worried about him starting school and being thought of as older than he is. I often get "why isn't he at school' questions and worry teachers and pupils might treat him older because he looks it. Does anyone else have a big for age DC and have had any problems?

According to this your DS is a healthy weight for his height.

My DS is 6 and is very tall for his age (98th percentile for height). It hasn't caused any problems at school as everyone knows he is in year 1 - it's only strangers who think he must be older. He's not even the tallest boy in his class!

Don't stress - he'll be fine.

Sociologically speaking, taller and more mature featured males have an advantage in life over their peers, for being recognised quicker as a leader and in terms of popularity (according to research, anyway), so I wouldn't worry about it!

Aargh, I posted but m y message went missing.

What is was going to say was not to worry. My DS was always very tall for his age. he is now 14 and over 6ft (with szie 12 feet!!!).

I only had one incident when someone though he was older. We were at the swimming baths, DS was about 3. He was using the sides of the pool to propel himself up to the other side - wearing armbands. He tried to push a woman out of the way - who immediately approached me and said that my son was very rude and should have known better. I was ab it taken aback, so didn't reply. I guess she though that he was older than 3.

Anyway - he has always loved being tall. DSS is also tall - he is about 6ft 3 now at 15 - and was a big child.

It can be awkward when we go somwhere and have toargue for the family ticket price - without proof of our two eldest being only 14 and 15.

Try not to worry - he will be fine!!

Yes!! My Ds(5.3) is starting P1 in August. He is 118cm 91st percentile. At the moment he is 91st percentile for weight as well but it fluctuates when he has a growth spurt.
He went to an induction day at the school before the end of term and a few other mums were overheard gossiping about why he must have been held back a year. It was quite upsetting especially as one of them then said to my Ds "oh you can look after the little ones as you know what your doing" infront of all the other parents and didn't let me correct her just kept saying its ok you don't have to explain to us, with a stupid condescending look on her face.
Its hard to know what to say

DS is in p1, going into p2 after the summer. He is 5 and a half and was the youngest in his class. He was off the height chart, always sitting above the top line for height and below for weight. I can honestly say his height has never been an issue in school. Though he towers over a few of his peers, there is one boy in his class his size. When he was just three, people did ask him if he was in school though and wondered why he looked at them blankly. We always get "ooh he is tall" comments. But half his genetics are from a 6foot 5 man. But in school he has been fine. His teachers have never expected more than he can give. He is pretty popular with a close group of friends. If anything, school has helped him mature, so he doesn't seem as huge as he did before school

Chill and get used to it. My DS is 14 6ft1ins and in size 13 shoes.

Look at it as a blessing,

Dee - hopefully the other mum will feel silly when she finds out he's only 5!

91st centile isnt that tall. According to the charts I'm 98th for 20 and am only 5'91/2"/176cm so although tall not unusually so..... Relax!!!
