DS currently gets fruit with baby rice for his breakfast every day would like to give him a change but all the baby porridge and cereals are not lactose free and i've been told weetabix is a no no. He is 5 month old

Is he lactose or milk protein intolerant? DS was milk protein intolerant, he had porridge made with soy milk, toast and sunflower spread, goats cheese on toast,

lola88 · 08/07/2012 09:22

just lactose doc says i can start cooking with normal milk at 6 months so for the next month i don't know what to give him

Fine milled porridge oats made with Oatly milk and mix in some fruit purée.

Don't go for ready brek as it has a lot of salt in it.

DS is allergic to cow's milk and there was definitely a baby cereal that didn't contain milk, it was a banana one iirc.

Readybrek doesn't have salt or sugar added, just oats and vitamins. Its much cheaper than baby porridges which are a rip off IMO. Make with Oatly and add fruit which you can vary every day. :)

trixymalixy · 08/07/2012 13:17

Really? My HV told me specifically not to give ready brek because of the salt content. I have to admit that I have never checked to see if that is indeed the case.

abigboydidit · 09/07/2012 10:05

Readybrek has a risk of cows milk and lactose cross-contamination but weetabix doesnt - all info here. Could he not just have normal porridge oats? That's what I make DS who has CMP allergy. Though I have to admit I gave him nothing till after 6 months so not sure if there are risks if you introduce cereals etc earlier so feel free to ignore me!

Ready brek has got milk in it? I'm sure it does.

  • oats boiled in water with fruit purees obviously one of the easiest options.
  • toast smeared with mushy avocado/fresh mango/banana/fruit spread
  • fruit pots with toasted bread soldiers (or veggie pots, honestly you only know the difference at this stage)

savory breakfast? I live in asia, and breakfasts here are proper meals.
Most common is a rice porridge (overcooked mushy rice) with anything you fancy thrown in (pumpkin/sweet potato etc...) and some protein cooked with it such as a piece o fish, beans and pulses, mashed tofu etc....
anyone with a gluten or lactose intolerance should look into asian diets....

My DS was lactose intolerant and I used the cow's milk Lactofree brand to cook with.
Available in most supermarkets. Weetabix was fine as well.

lola88 · 09/07/2012 14:09

Can he have weetbix or ready brek before 6 months?

Toast wouldn't work because he's too small to eat himself he's only just mastered sucking on carrot sticks

What do you use for his milk feeds? Is he on normal formula or some prescription one? Can you not just use whatever you use for his milk drink to give him with his cereal?

lola88 · 09/07/2012 19:12

He is on SMA lactose free. Most baby cereals are not lactose free there are a few for 6mo+ but only 1 LF for 4mo+ and they don't seem to have it in any of the 3 supermarkets close to me. People have suggested weetabix and ready brek but are they ok for under 6 mo?

It's the actual cereal that not lactose free i can cook with/mix his formula with anything thats lactose free

No weetabix or ready brek - they've got gluten in and not advised for under 6 months old.

HuggyPomBear · 10/07/2012 23:05

Semolina with fruit purée? I used to whizz up half a banana and some tinned peach slices.

Also, 2 gorgeous concoctions are whizzed up mango and avocado (tastes like butter icing) and raspberry and avocado. Lovely texture. Good to spread on rice cakes etc

HuggyPomBear · 10/07/2012 23:09

Plum baby porridge is gluten and dairy free. Alternatively can you cut back to restart weaning at 6 months?

sashh · 12/07/2012 07:44

I don't tolerate milk well. Sorry can't offer advice for dc now, but when older some breakfast ideas I use as an adult.

Continental breakfast, including ham, cheese, bread, fruit.

Kegeree - batch cook and freeze in one person portions.

Nasi Goreng - indonesionan breakfast of rice and basically left overs.

Porridge made with water.

Boiled egg and soldiers.

Bubble and Squeak - again with left overs.
