DS 5.5 used to be dry at night

I didn't know where to put this - behaviour/development, or potty training, or even child health? Hope this will do

Basically as the title said DS1 had his 5th birthday in January and is nearly at the end of his first school year. He has been pretty reliably dry overnight since before he started school but the last couple of weeks he has wet the bed more nights than not :(
Could this simply be down to end of term tiredness? He isn't having accidents during the day, nor complaining of pain when weeing. He's eating happily and doesn't seem worried by anything at school.

I'm not getting cross with him, just putting him dry pants on and putting a towel on his bed and sorting it out in the morning.
Will putting him back in pull ups be counter productive and seem to give him permission not to go to the loo if he needs to?
I don't need the extra washing!

My just 6 year old DS has started doing this too in the last week. I'm going on the theory that it is just end of term tiredness . It probably would be counter productive to put him back in pull ups. Have you tried Bed Mats (Pampers make them and I'm sure there are others)? You put them under the fitted sheet, then if your DS has an accident the mat soaks everything up and protects the mattress and mattress cover. You just throw the mat away (you still need to wash the fitted sheet though).

Could it be threadworms?

Bedwetting is often a sign, along with nausea, tiredness and disrupted sleep.

Could you go in and inspect his bottom with a torch while he sleeps, just to check?

Nearly 6yo DD1 has been doing this the past couple of weeks too. She's been completely dry since Christmas. For the last couple of months I've been waking her when I go to bed at around 11 to take her to the toilet but 4 or 5 times in the last fortnight she's already wet the bed and is still fast asleep in it. Having dispaired of trying to dry sheets, duvet cover, waterproof bed pad and occasionally the duvet too in this awful wet weather I'm now doubling up on the bed. On top of the usual bed pad and top sheet I've got one of those disposable pads with a small flat sheet on top. If she does wet then at least I've only got a small sheet to contend with rather than the usual pile.

Hadn't considered tiredness tbh as she doesn't show any signs of it - though I guess that being fast asleep in the wet bed would maybe suggest she is. I wouldn't go back to pull-ups/night nappies as DD1 was still wetting hers until we decided to go cold turkey and she stopped weeing overnight.

Threadworms :( this parenting lark ain't glamourous! Will try shining a torch on him tonight but he hasn't been nauseous, and wetting himself doesn't seem to disturb his sleep! Like mejon's daughter, its not nice finding him fast aslee in a cold wet bed.

We already have waterproof sheets on the kids' beds so not worried about the mattress, just wish he wouldn't roll himself in the quilt - everyone else is too hot atm! I like the idea of double bedding though - makes a lot of sense.

I'm glad he's not the only one though

Its a phase, this too shall pass!

Do you stop drinks an hour before bedtime and make him go to the loo before bed. The muggy weather we're having at the moment means they're drinking more than normal. Could be as simple as restricting fluids and emptying bladder.

It may well be a UTI. Urinary tract infection.
My girls wet the bed when they have a UTI, there are not always other symptoms.
May be worth taking a urine sample to the GP.

SophiaWinters · 05/07/2012 17:47

Please keep a careful eye out for other symptoms. My daughter started wetting her bed again at the age of 4, we thought it was something to do with having just started school (it was around October time following her start in reception year). It turned out that it was a symptom of Type 1 Diabetes. Other symptoms to look out for are tiredness, thirst, weight loss. Please see your GP if you're concerned, a simple urine test or finger prick test can flag up if it's diabetes.

Thanks for the replies
Last night I went to put him on the loo around 930, but was already too late :( put a towel over the wet patch, changed his top and put him in pull ups - so have no idea how he managed to wet the replacement Tshirt during therest of the night!

Moomoomie - he had a UTI earlier this year which we found because he was having accidents during the day at school, and they suggested we checked, but he's OK during the the day atm
Sophia - I hadn't heard of bedwetting as a symptom of diabetes before. We had DD1 checked as she drinks so much, but happily she came up clear. I will keep a closer eye on what he drinks now, there is always a jug and beakers on the table so he tends to help himself - I haven't noticed an increase.
Cogito - partly yes, haven't consciously been restricting fluids before bed, but he always goes to the loo before getting in the bath, and then again when he's in his pyjamas

If he has already had a UTI this year, I would definitely take a sample along to the GP.

My ds aged 5.5 has started wetting the bed again too in the last fortnight. Also at school once. I'm just putting it down to extreme end of term tiredness. We also had a spate of it at the start of the school year last Sept, which passed fairly quickly, so I just riding it out with pampers bed mats and fleece blankets.
