Moses Basket Recommendations, please :)

Hello there :)

I'm currently pregnant with my second baby and looking for a moses basket, with stand, for preferably less than £100 :) Can anyone make any recommendations of ones they have tried and tested, please?

Often I have found the product reviews in store are from first time mums who have not had their baby yet, who tend to concentrate more on the aesthetics of it, rather than how sturdy and safe it may be.

Also, can I ask what others' opinions are of the padded lined baskets, please? They seem to be more sturdy but how safe are they if baby ends up with her face against the lining... is it breathable? I've previously read that cot bumpers aren't great for that very reason, so I'm concerned the padded lining on a may be similar?

Thanks :)

My recommendation is not to bother! They are so small that they are a more suitable bed for a kitten than a baby. It will be outgrown in now time. We were given one by family and we used it downstairs in the daytime for naps but since 3 weeks old he hasn't wanted to go to sleep in it and naps in his pram instead, which has the added bonus of me being able to get out at the same time.
Get a crib instead, we have a nice swinging one, although when he has fallen asleep we put the stoppers back in for safety reasons so he isn't swinging in it all night. No worries about him getting his face in a load of padding because there isn't any. Also cribs are that little bit bigger, at almost 3 months I reckon he will still fit in it for 2 months yet before going in big cot.

I used the moses for around 3-4months with a really giant baby so I did find we got good use out of it. I had it downstairs in the day and upstairs right next to our bed at night. Don't spend £100 if you don't need to though.

We have this John Lewis one for £35 which is very nice and simple (I'm not a fan of the cartoony styles) and does a good job and is looking like new ready for DC2 in a few weeks!

I bought a Mamas and Papas rocking stand from ebay for £15 to go with it but any stand will do it's really not one of the purchases you need to over think as it is used briefly and by a tiny immobile baby who really can't do anything to ruin it!

We put ours in the cot (on the highest setting) because I was concerned our DS would find the baby too accessible in a Moses Basket stand, plus it would be more unstable/prone to being knocked into etc.

Moses Baskets.. aren't they pretty much all the same? get a cheap one and save the money!

we have the same one as girlgonemild and a cheap non rocking M+P stand similar to this but paler wood. We took the hood off the basket as it was never used and just bought fitted sheets and a couple of grobags. It did ds well and is about to be used for dd when she finally decides to put in an appearance.

My DS1 wouldn't sleep in the moses basket was happier in the pram. luckily we had a Mamas and Papas 8 in one pram that came with a stand for the carry cot which we kept up stairs so only had to carry the carry cot bit up and down the stairs. Second time round we borrowed my brother's pram and just left our carry cot up the stairs. Both my DS's were big boys so it wasn't long until they were into the cot.

If you haven't bought a pram yet I would seriously consider borrowing one if you have any friends willing to lend for all the time they are in them. Spend your money on a good buggy that suits your needs as they will be in it much longer.

Recommend not to bother! If you want something snuggly that they sleep well in, try a Nature's Nest. We absolutely swore by ours as did the two friends we persuaded to buy one! You can pick up a secondhand one on ebay for less than £100.

I second the £35 John Lewis Basket, We loved ours and used it downstairs for naps and carried it upstairs next to bed at night. After 10weeks or so we started placing the basket inside the cotbed to get him used to it and it was a seamless transition.

I did fancy an amby nest but read a lot of negative reviews about safety and the transition to a 'normal' bed

Didn't have one with DD1 but as we'd moved house and had a smaller bedroom with DD2 I got a lovely one from M&S. Shouldn't have bothered as she slept in it for a total of about 1.5 hours. Would not settle at all in it so I had her in bed with me for 8 weeks (DH in spare room) then she went straight into her cot that was pushed right up against the bed so as near to me as possible without actually being in the same bed.

Hi OP,

We were bought this Moses basket from Argos:

www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3755589/c_1/1|category_root|Nursery|14417537/c_2/2|14417537|Cots%2C+nursery+furniture+and+bedding|14417580/c_3/3|cat_14417580|Moses+baskets|14417581.htm

We used it for about the first 8 weeks before moving DS into the cot.

The pros of having a Moses basket IMO are: you can easily move it from room to room in the house, it's small and doesn't take up much space and also it rocks the baby to sleep nicely.

The cons are: you can put a newborn straight into a cot, it's outgrown quickly, you also need to have sheets and blankets for the Moses basket as well as the cot (unless you get flat sheets and double them up in the Moses basket).

With link hopefully!

We had a basic moses basket similar to the JL one. DS hated it. He much preferred to sleep in the travel cot basinette upstairs and his lie flat rocker downstairs. With the DDs i used a silver cross pram carrycot in the travel cot!

Izziwotnots wicker 'gift' Moses basket and stand. They are fab. Sturdy and very pretty and stylish too. ( I have tried and tested on my dc1)
Think they are around £100 with stand.

TheVeryHungryScreamerpillar · 17/04/2015 21:36

We had a cheap Asda Moses basket for the first few weeks which was nice for LO to nap in during the day and meant that if he fell asleep downstairs in the evening we could carry him up without waking him. He has a swinging crib in our room for night time and I invested in breathable bumpers for his crib.

beth1987 · 18/04/2015 20:50

Hi got 2nd hand one (mama and papas with stand) for £30 with lots of sheets/fitted sheets/cellular blankets. Still using it at 8 weeks. Super handy to carry up/down stairs. Did get new mattress for approx £10. Will make lovely laundry basket after!

TarkaTheOtter · 18/04/2015 20:53

We got a second hand Clair de Lune one and used a John Lewis stand. They are a bit bigger so 91st centile height ds was in it until 6months.

SweepTheHalls · 18/04/2015 20:55

Don't bother, buy a bedside crib Smile

Portobelly · 19/04/2015 07:02

Get one on freecycle or a charity shop. It's very likely to be in perfect condition.

TwiggyHeart · 19/04/2015 07:18

Don't bother! For a little more you can get the Chicco Next2Me which is a bedside crib and stand alone crib, much better value and good re sale

Nessalina · 19/04/2015 07:33

We were loaned one by a friend and just bought a new mattress for it. They really are all the same, frame-wise, what's important is that you get a decent firm mattress for it.

To be honest though, whilst it's been convenient, we didn't need it, we've used a Bednest in our bedroom, which has been absolutely brilliant, highly recommended. We also got an iCandy Apple 2 Pear travel system that came with a bassinet, and that has been marvellous! He's a big lad and at 5.5 months he still comfortably fits in the bassinet which we've used as a travel cot when we've been away, and could easily have replaced the Moses basket in the lounge. If you do buy a buggy with detachable bassinet you must check that they can be used set on the floor - they have to be ventilated in a certain way I think!
