My dentist didn't want to see them until they were 2/3, DD is 5 and has had 2 checkups so far, I take her when I go should book my appointment actually

spaceal · 29/06/2012 10:44

We took my now 15-month old DD when she had about 4 teeth, just when I had an appointment. Dentist said that was about right.

Imperfectionist · 29/06/2012 11:29

I was told not until 3 or 4 years of age my our paediatrician. DS is now 3.5. I should probably book an appointment...

we are told to take them from when they first get teeth so mine have been registered and going from about 6 months. I just took them along for my appointments and they got their teeth checked at the same time

Goingtorainagain · 29/06/2012 13:02

Thanks for your replies, ill give them a call later and see what they say.

DD's have their first check in a few weeks time. They are 3.5 and 2.

hoodoo12345 · 30/06/2012 19:08

Took my three when they were around 2 or 3.

Sirzy · 30/06/2012 19:38

I registered DS when he was about 6 months and he has been every 6 months since

abigboydidit · 30/06/2012 21:49

I have been taking DS since he was 6 months old (he's only been twice as he's still a baby!). The dentist had a wee feel in his mouth first time but said its more about getting them used to the surgery and feeling relaxed there. He sat on my chest on Friday while I had my check up and was screaming with delight watching my get my gob prodded!

ClaireBunting · 30/06/2012 21:52

I've always taken mine when I have gone for my own appointments. The dentist will have a quick peek and perhaps count teeth.

They did not have appointments in their own right until 3+.

Kt1991 · 14/07/2012 21:47

I work at a dental practice, and they recommend you to bring the children along each time you go so they get used to it :) The dentist may have a quick peek, but they generally say from 2 1/2 to 3 years is the best age

diyqueen · 15/07/2012 22:54

I've been wondering about this, the dentist said to bring dd along to my next appointment (when she'll be about 18 months) but I'm already visualising her rampaging round the room, there is no way she'd sit on my lap for as long as my check-up takes. I'll be going when dp's at work so would be on my own. How does it work with small toddlers?

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 16/07/2012 22:12

I have exactly the same question as diyqueen can anyone tell us how it works with a rampaging toddler?!

5madthings · 16/07/2012 22:19

my dd is about to have her first check up, she is 19mths they didnt want to register as they dont register under 2's but as she has 16 teeth i said that seemed a bit daft and they agreed, all my others had checks from about 12-18mths onwards, they would just sit on my lap and hopefully let the dentist have a quick look, its more about them getting used to going to the dentist at this age.

they always got given a sticker which they all love and enjoyed sitting in the chair on my lap as it moves etc :)

a check up for a baby/toddler can be done in literally a few minutes, its not the same as an adult check up :)

MissPricklePants · 16/07/2012 22:20

My dd is 3.2 and has gone every 6 months from being 6 months old. diyqueen can you not fasten her into the pushchair? Thats what I did with dd when she was smaller, I'm a single parent so she comes with me every time and now generally stands next to me watching what the dentist does!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/07/2012 22:27

DD has been going since she was 6 months, every six months for a ride in the chair and a disney sticker. Sometimes she even lets the dentist have a feel in her mouth.

Checkups are also for me as in dentist gives me loads of bumph on weaning/healthy foods/hidden sugars etc and warns me not to put Irn Bru in her bottle.

Kt1991 · 19/07/2012 22:21

Can always take toys into the surgery too to distract them :) if they dont get a thorough look I wouldn't worry too much unless you think theres anything wrong with the way their teeth are growing. Some children love coming because they get the sticker at the end of it too :)

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 20/07/2012 09:21

I enquired at my local NHS dentist for DD a few months ago when she was about 14 months old and had 4 or 5 teeth. They said they don't register children until they are at least two.

It would be nice for DD to get used to the dentist, but I go to a private practice and I'm not sure they see children. Besides, I wouldn't want to pay for DD to go to the dentist when she can get free check-ups/treatment on the NHS. Also, my practice is a bit of a pain to get to, especially with DD in tow (been going for years and have moved a couple of times since I started going).
