Does he get regular naps during the day?

Naps in the day are a sore point. After lunch i let him play for a.bit...then tey to encourage. Nap. Would like him to go down for around an hour....but this very rarely if ever happens. He just doea not want to sleep regardless of time.
sometimes he gets completely shattered and will fall asleep for half hour in the pram as we are walking somewhere. I reLise this is not the way to do it.... Ut ive got to the point of doing whTever works.
bedtime routine ia quite nice.... 5pm to 530ish ill give him dinner. At the table with me...brillinant eater but very independant so makes the most astounding mess...meaning that we wipe off...play for a few mins then go and have a bath. Adores his bath and will spend as long as poasi le in there. Ao bu the time we are out its 7ish.
get dried and dressea in a nice calm atmosphere and then sit down on the bed to read a bedtime story...
now this is where it goes wrong...when we were living in our last place and ds was6 months...our bedroom window got shot in with a high powerd air riffle...our landlord hpwever did not fix thos for nearly 3 months....ao we were stuck sleeping in the front room. Hes been in bed with me since birth anyway....but we as he was up every single.hour without fail until 5 montths old...but up until this point he was starting to do reLly well sleeping in a cot. Obviously this messed everything up as there was no room for a.cot :-

anyway as spon as we finish the story he wanta to get up....so i givw him a little warmed milk in a cup and then explain that its bedtime. No luck. From this point on until usually around 11pm i do everything i can not to loose my temper basically. Sounds awful but im at my witts end. The only way he usually falls asleep is by me cuddling him on my lap...like you would a newborn.
i know ive messed up in alot of ways...im fully aware of my faults with everything to do with bedtime. Ivw tried everything bar leaving him to scream as i dont personally feel comfortable with it.
im just struggling now. About 3 nights a week he will go to sleep from around 8pm...wake up at 9pm and is then up until around 3am. I need sleep now. Or not even sleep...just time to do the washing up!

It sounds to me like he's over tired. Your bed time routine is exactly the same as mine, dinner-bath-bed. I have a DD the same age, but I get her out of the bath around 6, and get her to bed at 7:30. If she's up any later than that she'll get really irritable and won't sleep, so I know she's over tired at this point.
She still has milk to go to sleep with too.
She's always been a terrible sleeper, but now she'll go down in ten minutes and wake only once in the night for a little bit of milk so i'm pleased with that!

As for day time naps, I try and get her to go for one as early as possible, she goes down around 10am and sleeps for a good couple of hours, and then has lunch when she wakes up.

Have you tried getting him down for a nap sooner rather than later?

Don't feel as though you've messed up or that you're a bad parent just because your child won't go to sleep, it's not your fault, and he will get himself in to a routine eventually. I know how frustrating it can be, trust me, but try not to blame yourself, it just so happens that some children are crap sleepers!

Thanks for the encouragement! Ive tried to get him down earlier. He is more likely to have a little nap at that sort of time...but again its pretty rare. It just ends up that hes arsey all morning then if we go out hell pass out in the pram for a bit
milk becore bed used to really help him. He was bf until 3 months when he developed an intollerence to my milk and dairy. So was put on soya milk. He went onto cows milk at ayear. Wasnt particularly interested in bottles much from 11 months though so that was pretty much our only sleep aid out the window! Lol
i think youre right and it is him being over tierd. ThT and just exessively awkward. Lol its good to know that im not own my own with this though. All of my friends children...even 3 newborns are prwtty much sleeping through the night....and its a massive inconvenience that leaves them shatterd and unable to function if their child is up more than twice in a night. I just feel like screaming TRY SURVIVING ON 3 HOURS SLEEP FOR 15 MONTHS!!!!! Just turns me i to a conplete bitch! Lol. But im gunna blame that on the sleep deprevation. Lol
looks like i may have to start all of this again though...potential dc2 better be a good sleeper!!!! :-)

In a very similar boat. I posted a while back actually, DS is 17 months and it's been this way for the last 2 months. He's never been a good sleeper for naps but slept pretty well at night. We moved him from our bed to a bedside cot and I night-weaned him. Since then it takes around 2 hours a night to get him to wind down and go to sleep. He often ends up so tired he screams but like you I can't leave him to cry.

I don't know if this would work for you but DH and I have started taking DS out for a walk in the evenings if we can't get him to wind down. It doesn't get him to sleep any quicker but it means we're not tied to the bedroom getting more and more frustrated and it does at least feel like we've had a bit of time together before we ultimately fall asleep while trying to get DS to sleep around 10.

It's horribly frustrating and you do wonder if it's something you've done or could solve. I think it's just a phase we have to ride out. Hope you get some relief soon.

My DS is only 5 months but a nightmare sleeper i've totally gave up a time for bed i just watch him closely from about 5.30 and when he starts to look tired i take him straight up jammys on and bed i found trying to force him at the 'right time' was useless and led to hours of crying and screaming. Some nights are good like tonight he was tired but iin a good mood so we managed a bath n a story then right to sleep others are not as good but 1hr tops and sleeping.

I find people with good sleepers like to tell you all the things you are doing wrong and if you do xyz your baby will sleep it makes me feel like it's all my fault at times but i honestly don't think DS will ever be a good sleeper even if Gina Ford herself tried to get him down.
