Dd1's primary don't do the dressing up thing, but dd2's nursery does and she is going as Lola and taking 'I will not ever never eat a tomato'.

customising old floral dress with white collar, black tights and shoes and two ribbons in hair.

I need some inspiration for this, my dd is in reception. I thought of Little Red Riding Hood but on speaking to some of the other mums so have they. Any ideas gratefully received without resorting to a Princess Dress in desperation.

Mine's going as a ballerina - out of "The Secret Ballerina" - easy for me as she will just wear ballet kit - but nightmare for loo trips 1

KBear · 27/02/2006 21:23

My DD is going as Hermione from Harry Potter - last year she went as The Cat in the Hat. Made a hat from card, painted red stripes on it and she wore her black cat costume.

notasheep · 27/02/2006 22:02

My dd is going as Hermione too and it so happens that she is actually called Hermione

CHUNKYMUNKEY · 27/02/2006 22:04

Thanks Lockets, My only worry about the princess dress is my dd going to the toilet with a long princess dress on. Going to the toilet is something she worries about, although she hasn't had any accidents for ages. She has just turned 4.6. Also do they wear their uniform on underneath? I'm now thinking maybe a witch ala Meg and Mog. Got to go and make lunches for tommorow and try and get my brain into gear. Night everyone.

ds is going to be pc plod fromo Noddy & dd is going as a cat!

Orinoco · 27/02/2006 22:25

bloomin heck I'm having nightmares with this.

The note from school said the costume had to be home made, with the child's input, and the child had to be able to discuss the character.

So, I duly made a mermaid costume (which, admittedly, did look rubbish Grin) but I overheard a conversation in the playground this morning saying that everyone's ignoring this and using shop made costumes Angry

So, feeling guilty for even considering sending dd to school in a home made, manky costume I went to ASDA and bought her her heart's desire - a Sleeping Beauty dress. Then, feeling guilt about the cost, asked dd to pay for half from her piggy bank! DD readily agreed - and tried it on - and it comes all the way to the floor! There's no way she can wear it with the weather that's been predicted - it'll be grey!

So, she decided she wanted to wear her nurses costume, hence my \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=43&threadid=150485&stamp=060227211848\thread} here... but when I put her to bed she decided she wants to go as a vet

we are sans imagination here

dd is now desperate to go as any of the rainbow fairies (Ruby the Red as we have giant fake ruby thing she got in a magazine).

Initially she wanted to go as Moody Margaret (from Horrid Henry).

Thankfully, as ds is in the nursery class, he only has to bring in his favourite book (hooray!).

DS (just 5 in reception) is going as Willy Wonka. The letter from school said that a mask, hat or costume to represent the character. My friend is doing a mask with her DS. I was just going to do a top hat and stick. Since it is supposed to be DS making it I thought I would make the hat out of black card and then get DS to decorate it - OK I know Willy Wonka's is not decorated but DS has to have some input. I have also bought some creamy-beigy coloured card and I am going to get DS to draw lines/circles on it in brown felt tip to represent the grain/knots of wood and then roll it up and stick a gold bauble on the end, to make a cane. Have been busy re-reading page 80 of the book for Willy's description. I am assuming this will be enough.

DS originally wanted to go as Darth Vader but I vetoed this.

KBear · 28/02/2006 14:05

Other ideas I had today for girl book characters!

Katie Morag - but aran jumper, check skirt (neither of which we own!)

Pippi Longstocking - blue dress and stripey tights and plaits,a horse and a monkey (ditto brackets as above)!

World Book Day for us was a big disappointment-dd was all dressed up as Alice in Wonderland, only to get to school to find that it was shut due to the snow!

cupcakes · 02/03/2006 19:52

They didn't dress up at ds's school but made hats to do with favourite book. Ds and I made a bucket shaped hat (the handle hanging under his chin) with his drawn pictures of dinosaurs stuck on - Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs. He was disappointed not to have won - but not as much as me. Esp as the girl who did win (his best friend so I shouldn't be bitter) just stuck sweet packets on a hat as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - and I know she hasn't read the book, just watched the film.
Grumble...
