late walkers / potty training.... likely to be problem?

My DS was later than most to walk - a little over 18 mts. He didnt crawl until 14 mths but otherwise with milestones he has been pretty average. He is now 2.6 and I believe it is summer(?????) so I want to start potty training. At present he is very reluctant to even sit on the potty so I havent progressed beyond the odd suggestion of sitting before a bath / before getting dressed in the morning etc. Can anyone out there reassure me that later walkers are able to be trained within 12 mts of walking or advise me how to encourage him to want to sit. I do the whole story / distraction thing obviously...

One of the latest walkers from our antenatal group was one of the earliest to potty train so I don't think it necessarily follows. For now I'd keep going with gentle encouragement and plenty of bare bum time (if the weather ever improves).

Dd2 was dry day and night before she could walk independently. Grin

If he's ready, he's ready. Does he show awareness of weeing etc?

I agree! The walking does not matter. Whatis important is whether they are ready to be trained.
Like your ds, my dd1 only crawled at 14 months and walked at 18 months. We did potty training when she was 2 and 2 months and she was dry and clean within a week ( in the day).

My son was fully potty trained within 4 months of walking

MirandaWest · 27/06/2012 07:19

Both DS and DD were potty trained within 12 months of walking - with DD it was 4 months after she could walk - DS was about 11 months after walking I think.

My dd walked at 23 months and potty trained at 26 months. She was fully dry during the day within a week.

Happenstance · 27/06/2012 15:59

DD1 is 2.8 walked at 10 months refuses to even consider potty training Sad

TeuchterInTheCity · 27/06/2012 21:54

Reassuring to know Happenstance, DD is 2.7 and also absolutely not interested in potty training. Have given up for now as DC2 is imminent.

She walked at 16 months, which was late compared to her peers.

DD first wailked at 17mnths, potty trained just after two.She showed no interest in potty. A week later she was using a toilet. She just had no interest the week I chose !

Funnily enough for another reason entirely I was looking back though my DS's medical records today.

2 years 11 months - he had 4 words. He wasn't really potty trained. He didn't walk well. I worried so much because he had been premature.

He was talking, running and on the loo a few months later. Smile They put it down as a 'slight delay'. He's absolutely fine now - he's 14!

My ds was a late walker (19 months), and we potty trained after he was 3. So pretty late. However, we waited until he was ready and frankly it was really quite easy. He has had very few accidents, and it is something that we've never had to worry about.

In terms of actually training it we bribed him with chocolate buttons. One if he just sat on the potty, one for a wee, two for a poo. Bad parenting, but it worked a charm.
