need another view with regards to my son's diet etc

have got a 12 year old son
very tall for his age -looks 15

always been very lean-not skinny but lean

just recently started getting a podgy tummy-he's not very happy about it
did his bmi thing yesterday and he is just into the overweight range so need to stamp on it pronto

a typical day's food is something like this;

breakfast-a bowl of cheerios or shreddies with semi skimmed milk
snack of a piece of fruit or a healthy cereal bar mid morning

lunch is usually a sandwich made with 2 slices of either wholemeal or granary bread, chicken/ham/cheese -the usual. salad on the side-tomato, cucumber, carrot sticks etc, fruit for pudding and a drink of diluted pure juice

dinner in the evening usually something like spag bol, chicken and baked potato and veg, -usual family meals.

he usually snacks on fruit or dry bread [weird] but of course will eat chocolate/cake etc if it's available which it usually is a couple of times a week.

where am i going wrong? is it portion size do you think?? i do give him quite large portions on the basis he is a big lad and is growing... maybe that needs to be cut

he has got a new bike and have also enrolled him at a gym where he can swim and use the cadio equipment in case it's lack of exercise

It sounds like he eats less than my 9 yr old!!! His diet sounds really healthy to me and if he's exercising as well chances are it is just his age and he will shortly shoot up and bulk out slightly = tummy gone!

it's quite carb heavy, otherwise doesn't sound too bad to me. portion size, yes maybe try to limit that and have him have less carbs/more protein (will also keep him going longer)

what is he drinking and how much? juice is quite calorific, as is milk, better stick to water, tea, diluted juice.

just HOW much excercise is he doing? at this age ideally he should do an hour of cardio (running around,cycling,football) a day + lots of moving.

he isn't doing enough exercise hence me signing him for gym etc
he wants to sit and read all the time

in my experience with sons they go through a bit of a podgy stage at about this age-but I think this was before they started to grow? I wouldn't say anything to him, provide healthy food at home, but I wonder if he is buying and eating rubbish on the way to school? my 19 year old confessed recently that was what he did! however more important to keep up their self esteem than worry too much I think-teenage boys just as body conscious as girls ime.

I think they often have a podgy stage then grow into it - my brother was very chubby at 10-12 then stayed practically the same weight all through secondary school while his height shot up, has been very slim since then.

His diet sounds fine to me, Are you sure he is not eating other things he is not telling you about? at school on his way home or drinking lots of sugary drinks

He is 12.
Yes encourage him to be active, find things to enjoy, eat healthy food, have the right portion size etc.

But just because he is a tad over weight don't panic. He still has alot of growing to do at 12.

BMI not really accurate for children/teenagers, becuase often they are going through/about to go through growth spurts. Also, if he has more muscle than fat, his BMI could be higher than it 'should' be - lots of olympic athletes are officially 'obese' by their BMI becuase muscle weighs so much more than fat.

Maybe he is eating on the sly? The diet you provide is extremely healthy. At that age I was esting far more than that, and I was rake thin. As long as children doing sport at that age (particularly boys), most can eat pretty much anything and everything. Is there a possibility he is going to a corner shop and buying chocs, crisps etc.
