Nappies leaking up back....what am i doing wrong?

Hi, I have used both Pampers and Huggies newborn ( size 1) for my 16 day old DD. I am getting quite a few instances of wet back and sides through the babygrow and am wondering if I am doing something wrong when fitting the nappies on? Any advice from more experienced mums?

Also is there any way of avoiding a big mess and wet clothes when DD decides to pee mid change?

You could try going up a size. That always worked for me when DC start leaking around the sides and back.

Disposable nappies generally don't have elastic round the back so you will hav ethis problem with newborn poo. You will get far less poo leaks with washable nappies - which are all elasticated at the back and have much better elastic at the legs.

I found Huggies and pampers to be a bit rubbish to be honest. Huggies were better in size 1s but any bigger and they're shockingly bad! Try Asdas own, I found them to be really good. Otherwise, there will be plenty of leaky nappies in the months to come! Trick is to change as soon as you know they pooped (peep through the leghole if you have to!) to avoid them squirting it around Grin

Yep, size bigger.. try the Lidl ones too.

When changing stick the new nappy under her before you take off the old one

NellyBluth · 26/06/2012 21:23

Leakages up the back always seemed to mean we needed a bigger size. What weight is your DD? Also, just make sure you are doing the nappy up tight enough - for some reason we kept putting our DD's on very loose, which was a disaster - and the frills on the legs are out. But sometimes the poo is just lovely and runny, and you don't notice straight away that they have been, and they are lying in the perfect position for it to run everywhere!

For the mid-change stealth pee that girls manage so well, I always make sure that all her clothes are tucked up really high near her shoulders, and then have some kitchen roll under her bum. It might not always be enough to catch all the pee, but you can see more clearly when she is going and it often gives you enough time to grab a towel or nappy to catch the pee. Actually, I'm a big fan of kitchen roll for cleaning up the worst of the poo as well before getting in their with wipes or cotton wool. Also, get the new nappy under her bum before you put cream on.

Try going up a size - tended to work with DS, even if he was nowhere near the weight limit on the old size.

MissRee · 26/06/2012 21:38

Whenever I tried just going up a size, it just moved the leak from the back to the legs Grin

OlympicFlame · 26/06/2012 21:40

IME it's a problem only when they're newborn. The nappies just aren't designed for newborn poo. It's a total PITA! The number of times I struggled to get a poo covered vest over my DS's head was ridiculous.

OlympicFlame · 26/06/2012 21:43

And with regard to the peeing the moment the nappies off... Lay some kitchen roll/cotton wool pad (those big ones, or the ones you can tear) underneath ensuring all clothes are raised up as high as you can before you actually remove the nappy. Be thankful you have a DD Grin... DS's arc per across the room the moment the cold hits them. I spent most of the early days covered and cleaning it off walls.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 26/06/2012 22:03

Haha Olympic, ver true,

DS weed in DP's face nearly every time he changed a nappy... never weed on me though Grin

NellyBluth · 26/06/2012 22:13

I only just discovered that you can roll a vest off, rather than take it over their head. DD is 5mo and we rarely have a disaster nappy any more. I wish I had known how to do that earlier...

Yes, it is newborn poo that is more of a problem - but then the other week DD did a poo in her door bouncer before we realised... apparently, in the right position, she can get it in her hair... Confused

Springforward · 26/06/2012 22:50

Vests can also be stretched over baby shoulders so they come off over feet rather than head, which stops the poo in hair problem.

Springforward · 26/06/2012 22:51

If they've got the right neckline that is!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 26/06/2012 22:52

If it's that bad then just cut the vest off (scissors were kept within arms length of the change table for just this reason)

Bllllerrrgh

littleweed10 · 26/06/2012 23:11

Re changing, lay baby half way down a muslin square, folded once, take off nappy, wipe etc, using the spare piece of muslin square to cover over nether region, limits piddle onto you, running off matt, wetting clothes etc.

fishybits · 26/06/2012 23:17

Why not get a towelling mat with a waterproof backing to soak up any stealth pees. We tried everything mentioned above and this works saves a fortune in kitchen paper too John Lewis sell them. Tesco own brand of nappies is pretty good.

ceeveebee · 26/06/2012 23:27

I always take vests off over their shoulders down their body rather than over their heads, otherwise you risk the baby getting pooey hair eeww!

Hoorain · 11/04/2022 22:49

Hi mums ... I am worried need your help please my baby is 14 month old now but due to overweight 18kg i am fed up every nappy and pants i tried but poop leaked from back side what should i do no company having bigger size above 8 , huggies are too costly for me any suggestion please 🙂

BookFiend4Life · 12/04/2022 03:04

For me, blowouts mean go up a size, to secure them I usually lay my hand flat across her belly over the front of the diaper then pull up and attach the sides. It can be pretty tight, you just want to be able to run a finger underneath the edges.

To prevent messes while changing: you can lay a fresh diaper underneath her before you take the old diaper off, if she starts to pee you can use the old diaper to prevent it from spraying, then wipe her up after.

Piper22 · 12/04/2022 03:40

You’re probably putting your baby in the wrong size nappy
