Is loss of interest in solids a sign of teething?

Baby has a tooth erupted through the surface of gums and for the past 5 days refused solids despite reducing milk feeds. She takes milk no problem. She also has been extra drooling and SCREAMINGZ non stop for 3 hours now, really used and wanting me to hold her but crying regardless....she also woke up at 1am last night which is unlike her.

Does this sound like teething??

She's 7.5 months.

yes yes yes. Go back to puree like baby food, and try giving it to her cold or room temp. Or give her bread sticks to 'dip' in the puree. It will be messy but she might take in a bit!

Yep sounds like teething to me. Add in rosy cheeks and you've just described ds at 6mo. He's now 14 mo and his premolars are cutting. Now that's grim.

The tether you put in the freezer are good, raw carrot sticks from the fridge too. And dentinox and calpol, are your friends.

She has flushed cheeks too...I usually give her pureeds baby food and she's refusing that....anything solid just milk. Really worried. She's screams when I give her those cold fridge teethers and the bonjela teething gel doesn't seem to be helping.

Although haven't tried calpol yet will give her some before bed.

What shall I do if she wakes at might again? Give her milk or just cuddles?

Thanks.

i'd increase the milk feeds back up until the teeth have appeared (when the teething symptoms die down- apparently it's the pressure on the gums that does it)

it's like comfort food.

A few days off solids is fine, when she's back eating bulk it up with avocado and high calorie stuff. Like nickel says try to get her to take more milk, little and often. If she wakes through the night, cuddles and calpol if you can. I have given ds ibuprofen too on really bad nights. Does she chew on anything? Toys, books (sorry nickel), have them to hand for through the night. Ds would get really hot, so a wet cloth would calm him down too.

This too shall pass!

My hv told me to decrease milk to make her hungrier she would eat her solids (she was having 800mls and now 600 mls).

Also the tooth has erupted on the surface I can jut see and feel it...just. When you say when the tooth appers it gts better is tht when the tooth is fully through?

Milk is the most calorific thing your dd is consuming just now, I wouldn't cut it Down. If you think of it like some carrot purée or 100ml of milk, dd would have to eat about 9 carrots worth to get the same calories.

I think what the Hv might mean is throughout weaning you begin to reduce milk intake to encourage more solids, but I think just now when she is refusing solids upping milk will do less harm. Fwiw ds was on about 800mls at 7m and is still taking around 600mls a day now. And he eats like a horse on top of that. But he is very active!

With ds he always upped his milk when teething, he still does, but I've found once the tooth has cut the gum he settles a bit more. However with ds he cut 4 teeth in a week and then between Christmas ad new year went from 4 to 8 teeth. He now has, I think 14. But I value my fingers too much to properly confirm it.

Glaikit - DD eats books.
it's her favourite meal.
I made the mistake of giving her a buggy book. it's pulp now. Grin

nickelbarapasaurus · 26/06/2012 11:35

Alabama - i wouldn't decrease her milk! Shock
she needs comfort now, not "you must eat your solids naughty girl!"
now the tooth has erupted, it should calm down a bit. :)
