Success stories with PUPD please? Last night took over 2 hours to work and we've only got 2 weeks to crack it!

DH has taken a fortnight off work to help out with DS's (11.5 months) sleep.

We've decided on PUPD and have written up a plan for both naps, bedtime and night wakings. All previous attempts have been by me alone and Ive failed miserably and ended up feeding to sleep.

He has been waking 2-3 times every night and Im getting too exhausted now after a shocking year of this. I have also got insomnia on top of a bad sleeping baby so am not in a good place emotionally :(

DH will be doing night wakings and I will be trying to do naps and bedtime.

Last night took DH over 2 hours of PUPD for DS to get to sleep! Please reassure me that it gets better!

I have read numerous threads in Sleep forum over the last year but want to post here as I want to hear success stories from people who have had success with it.

I might be wrong bit I don't think PUPD is the best method for an 11 month old, I think it is more suited to younger babies?

Have a look on the www.sleepstore.co.nz website they have really useful articles for different age ranges and sleep solutions or training. I think verbal reassurance or gradual retreat might work better?

Thanks for the link.

We have researched all the methods and you are right as he is borderline too old for it but we still feel it would be best for him. I guess we have altered it slightly with more emphasis to comfort in cot and reassure rather than just pick up. Picking up to comfort would be the last method of comfort used.

I am not happy to do gradual retreat as I feel it would send him mixed messages ie being present in the room but instead of being the usual present caregiver, the role is to watch, ignore and remind him it's time to sleep. IMO this doesn't sit well with me, feels a little like taunting him. Maybe if he was older but not for him now.

Have you considered cc? We did a version of cc mixed with pu/pd so leave to cry for 1 min then pick up and comfort, then leave for 1 min. Within 8 mins she had self settled and (bar teething) sleeps 7am-7pm. Good luck.

I'm going through this with my 8 m/o DS and have with other 2 as well. Longest has been about an hour. I believe older babies can be over stimulated and an alternative is a quick hug and a kiss when they stand up and then lay them back down without picking them up. There is a babywhisperer forum that might have more info. Good luck!

We did Pu/pd with dd1 when she was about 2. It took an hour and a half & we only had to do it for 1 night.

Lucky you having such a supportive dh. Smile

Any update upcydaisy? Hope he's sleeping better now :)

I did walk in/walk out with DD1 when she was 9/10 months - it's the older baby version of PU/PD. Worked brilliantly, it transformed bedtimes from a two-hour long crying/breastfeeding marathon into a much shorter, easier bedtime with a lot less crying from DD and less stress for me. I can't remember exactly but i think it took about a week before she really settled into it, but gradually shorter each night.

How are you getting on with it?

Piemistress · 06/07/2012 22:07

Is walk in walk out like cc?

SecrectFarleysNibbler · 07/07/2012 09:36

What's pupd?

queenofthepirates · 07/07/2012 18:42

pick up, put down.

caramel1 · 07/07/2012 19:26

I sat by my LO's cot and gradually moved closer to the door while he was going to sleep, if he realised I moved, I moved back to the cot. I never touched him or spoke, just made sure he could see me. I can't remember how long it took, but it worked pretty quickly.

I found that sitting down was better because I didn't end up with back ache.

Zimbah · 07/07/2012 22:57

Piemistress walk in/walk out isn't like cc, at least not the way I did it! I based my version on the baby whisperer but did it with shorter intervals. So I did the bedtime routine, put DD in the cot, left the room. I let her cry for only 20 seconds, went back in again, patted/rubbed her back, went out again. If she was standing up crying I would very swiftly lay her back down then go out again. If she was just grumbling or doing an "I'm trying to get to sleep" cry I didn't go in, I only went in if she was doing a distressed cry that lasted 20 seconds.

Zimbah · 07/07/2012 22:58

Just to add, I had tried gradual retreat first as i thought it would be a gentler method but it just made DD more upset seeing me there not responding to her.
