My ds2 is 4 and a half months old. He can now kick his covers and sometimes they can end up over his face. I must wake up about 10 times in the night to check him to see if he is ok. I worry so much about suffocation.

Racers · 27/02/2006 10:44

red37 have you tried grobags? they really are great as the cover can't be kicked off or end up over the baby's face.

Sad Poor parents though having to place a doll how they last placed their baby and then found it!Sad
spacecadet · 27/02/2006 10:48

how awful.
when my dd went into a cot, i put her so her feet were touching the bottom of the cot and tucked the sheets in, then she went into grobags.

Angeliz · 27/02/2006 10:49

i currently co-sleep and intended to with the next but this does worry me now!

red37 · 27/02/2006 10:53

I was given a grobag when he was born but I always thought that it wasnt recommended that babies sleep in them, especially overnight.

kittyfish · 27/02/2006 10:58

Grobags are brill, and I have never read anything about no sleeping in them overnight. Having said that, overheating in summer or if your central heating is on all night can be a risk, but they come with different tog ratings too. They also come with a room thermometer and ideal temps

colditz · 27/02/2006 11:00

Blankets with holes in. No pillows, duvets or fleeces.

Racers · 27/02/2006 11:03

Yes, you have to watch the tog rating and match the clothing (short sleeve, long leg etc) according to the room temp, but it's not all that complicated once you get the hang of it and worth it for the peace of mind. I didn't use a grobag for a few months but DD was born in the middle of summer and our room was getting up to 29degrees (v. hot for north of england!) She frequently slept in just a nappy Smile
\link{http://www.gro-group.co.uk/brands/grobag/\here is the official grobag site, though cheaper ones can be found in supermarkets etc}

I love grobags. I've recommended them to at least three people who have had babies recently that I know in RL.
My DD is 20 weeks old, she was a beggar for kicking off covers and recently for pulling things over her face. I've used a grobag from around week four, and she sleeps much better for it. We also have a room temperature thing and make sure it's at the ideal temperature, sometimes it's slightly over but we just had a warm house.

lazycow · 27/02/2006 11:24

As ds was born in the winter we used a thin sheet as a very tight swaddle in the early weeks over a thin sleepsuit (used to work like a charm to settle him). As well as this we used 1 or 2 open weave blankets tucked in tightly from his chest down depending on the bedroom temperature. He always seems quite warm enough but not too warm. I think this was more due to the tight wrapping as I always felt I would have been cold dressed as he was at night (but then I always need two duvets in the winter Smile)

As soon as he started wriggling out of his swaddle (around 4-5 months old) we used growbags and have ever since.

In the summer we sometimes used the very light ones made of cotton or just a vest.

Now it is very cold we use a 2.5 tog one and also warm pyjamas or a fleecy sleepsuit (ds always wakes up cold if we go strictly by the guide they give on the packaging but this took a while to work out)

We have about 6 growbags in various weights and I'll continue using them until he gets too old - not sure when that will be but I suppose I'll reckonise it when it happens. I also love the fact I never have to make the bed !!

Hulababy · 27/02/2006 11:40

We always used a Grobag, from the minute DD turned 10lbs (no smaller one at the time). Only ever used it at night. That is what they are designed for surely.

So long as you use the right size for your baby's age (length is NOT important, it is neck size that is vital) then they are perfectly safe I am sure.

CarolinaMoon · 27/02/2006 12:57

why wouldn't it be ok to use grobags at night? That's the whole point of them.

They are fab IMHO. We use one for co-sleeping (ok as long as you keep the duvet off the baby).
