When are babies out of prams?

Like roughly? I know it obviously depends on when they start walking but generally speaking is 3 too young? About right? Sometimes I see kids that look about 4 or 5 in pushchairs is this normal?

I'm asking because little one is now 7months old and next year when she is about 19 months old we would like to try for baby number 2 if we got pregnant straight away like we dd ith our baby, she woud be about 2.3 years.....is it unreasonable to think she would be out of a pram then and on those buggy board things?

Please don't laugh at me I genuinely haven't got the foggiest about these things and don't know when it it reasonable to expect them to be out of a pram.

I know I could sell my current travel system but would really like to use it again to help save some money.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on how far you walk, but both my dcs were out of pushchairs by 3 years. Ds1 was 3 years 2 months when ds1 was born, and I used the same pram.

Thank you. In regards to your how far they walk question, I mean out of the pram for good...woud it be feasible to baby wear the new baby for say 4 months while current baby used pram or would that be really hard to do? Would new baby still need a ram "base" even if worn?

Depends how far you walk and whjether she would be likely to need to have a nap when you're walking. I used buggy board with DC1 but he was 3.5 when DC2 was born. I would have got a double buggy if he'd been 2.3 though as we used to walk quite far and he used to nap on the move. Or you could make do with buggy and sling for first few months and then get a buggy board.

But if you're not yet pregnant, I think I'd wait til you are before working out the detail Grin

I was asking because we thought if we had to wait a lot longer than dd being about 2.3 years I would get pregnant sooner say maybe end of ths year and get a double buggy.if it was feasible to use a buggy board full time then we would wait.

I am so glad you asked this, we have a 10 month old and going to start trying for number 2 after new year, so he'll be 16.5 months. I got pregnant within 2 months last time, so if it happens again he won't be much past 2.
We have a Jane slalom R which I love and would not really want to get rid of it (cos it was so expensive too!!)
We're getting our son a smart trike for his first birthday, so hopefully he can use that when number 2 comes along!!

Depends a lot on what you are doing. My first wasn't ever really in a pushchair as she was a sling baby - but very much not using a pushchair at about 2 and a half.

However, as I often see on these threads, if you are really walking A LOT, as in miles a day then your child might well not manage that, and it can be safer to strap them in rather than have them bolt into a busy road if they are a bolter.

Also - what you plan to do with no 2. Some people use a buggy board or others put no 2 in a sling while the first is still in a buggy.

TheGalliantLadyDidymus · 24/06/2012 21:13

Like you said, it really does depend on the child. My ds1 hasn't been in a pram since just after his 2nd birthday. We walked everywhere too as we didn't have a car.

Ds2 is nearly 2 and is showing absolutely no signs of wanting to vacate the buggy. I'd rather he stayed in it for a while yet though. Having the pram means having somewhere to put bags etc while I also hold the 3yr olds hand and push the nearly 2 year old.

My DD is 34 months. I am due with #2 any day now and have bought a cheap second hand P&T from a mate as whilst DD will mostly walk brilliantly there's no way I can guarantee she'll walk as far or as fast as I need her to and we like to go out a lot and walk along the canal/in the park/peak district and her poor little legs would never keep up. If it's really hilly she struggles too so am aiming to encourage lots of walkign but accept that there will probably be lots of buggying the 2 of them as well

MrsFlippingHeck · 24/06/2012 22:34

Dd was 2.5 when ds was born and went straight into a buggy board no problem at all. (we don't walk miles though)

MrsHoolie · 24/06/2012 23:22

Definitely depends on the child. My just turned 2 year old DS walks every where but DD was still in the buggy alot at 2.
My advice is to get a decent sling and buy a double if you need it after the baby is born. We bought a lovely double,Mamas and Papas from EBay for £40!

Morph2 · 24/06/2012 23:24

i only have one child so my opinion is only of limited value. My DS 2.1 always wants to walk, will walk and walk and walk and only when he is so physically tired that he squats down to have a rest, i say why don't you hop in the pushchair and he will- before then pushchair is a no go area. His little friend who is 3.4 is always in his pushchair, won't walk anywhere. So i suppose i mean they are all different and it depends on what your child is like

Springforward · 24/06/2012 23:25

DS hasn't used a pram since turning 3, and for the previous six months it was only used on long days out, if he got too tired to walk/ needed a nap.

BackforGood · 24/06/2012 23:32

Depends so much on how far you walk, and also what your dc1's behaviour is like.
My sister's dc2 was born when her dc1 was only 16months, and she never used a sling, nor a double buggy, nor a buggy board nor anything - her dc 1 was a very placid child who didn't run off / tantrum, and was able to walk.
I have a God daughter who didn't take her first steps until she was 26months however - extreme I know, but 18months is quite within normal range for starting to walk, and if you need to walk a lot, then it's going to be tricky.
My ds used to walk everywhere before dc2 was born, and after that he wanted to go in the pushchair a lot more ! He was also quite -er... 'willful' so on many an occasion he had to be strapped in for his own safety, whereas my dd never had to be strapped in to keep her safe - she did what she was supposed to!
I really wouldn't worry too much at the moment - as you say, there is no due date yet - there are far too many variables to be worrying about it now.

Alabama100 · 25/06/2012 12:16

Thanks ladies...I wasn't worrying t all, I just wanted some feedback nd advice really as money is reasonably tight so we have to plan reasonably in in advance. I know it seems like a long way away but I really on't want to get pregnant next year then start worrying about practicalities and finances, like holing out for a new cot, new pram etc if feasibly we hold off a few more months then we could use what we already have. However if the feedback was that bby would need ram til well past 2.5 then we would try to get pregnant sooner, in afew months even.

Thanks.
