teething.... help... nothing works!

DS is 10 (ish) months give or take a few days. (depressing thought) ho hum, anyhow, basically he's cut 8 teeth in 5 months since january - poor baby and we know about each & every one. :(

he's never been a great sleeper, but atm it's worse than ever - i'm trying to work & have him up 95% of the night. :( anyhow, have used calpol, bonjela, the powders, nothing seems to help to settle him - even the the point of considering medised (no flaming, really is end of the tether time now) poor mite when I put my finger in is literally biting down on it so hard he's shaking his head at the same time.

the one I know has just cut is the one next to his two front ones (he's got the 4 top & bottom in the front. DP was wondering if it might be molers, but I thought it was too young?

anyhow what's a sure method to work/help him, DS1 suffered but not overly, least not this bad, plus with him it was back when medised could be given to under 6's. (he's now 6) so he had that instead of calpol

help.

Have you tried alternating calpol and neurofen every 2 hours? I'd try that before going near the medised.

Also I used to tie a knot in the corner of a muslin cloth, run it under a very cold tap and let them chew/suck on it.

We also found Calgel better than bonjela although not sure what the difference is now.

Ice tied up in a muslin works for us sometimes.

Ours also likes teething on plastic weaning spoons or baby toothbrush, both ends.

My sister swears by an Amber Teething Necklace. Dd never used one though.

You can keep the teething gel in the fridge too. Agree with above poster about alternative ibuprofen and paracetamol.

Hope he feels better soon, and you get some sleep.

Oh or Ambesol Liquid (not the teething gel).

is that safe with the muslin, sorry bit paranoid atm everything's in his mouth, but yes if it works, thing is it's by night he's like this.

i've tried the alternating every 2 hours before, but I don't want to medicate him for 'no reason' iycwim, and or do it for days on end, likewise can he be sent to nursery if he's having so much medicine, as don't you need to do it continuously or can it be donw by night only?

oh i've hard of ambsol before, can you do that and the calpol mix?

he's so sorry for himself bless him, atm I feel like i'm a pharmasist.

how long is safe to medicate for thou - one doctor told me calpol was ok for 10 days if that was what it took?

Sorry Anbesol (typo). AFAIK it is fine with Calpol, it contains an antiseptic and a local anaesthetic. I know adults who swear by it for ulcers so must be good Grin

Well it always says on that packet only use for 3 days, but if that's what a doctor told you.... If it was mean I would probably just save it for night time, it always seems to be worse then!

davidtennantsmistress · 24/06/2012 20:43

tbh that's the only time I do medicate him, i'm torn between my feelings personally on medicines (ie i'm the one who sleeps out a headache etc etc than take tablets,) and seeing him clearly in pain & wanting to give him everything with a little tick sheet like they have in hospitals just so we both get some sleep.

will try the ambsol (sp) tomorrow thanks, the necklace, will need to wait until payday.

wouldn't be so bad if he took a dummy, but he won't take that either.

Good luck, teething is horrible especially when you can't make them feel better. Hopefully it will all calm down again soon. Dd lives on yoghurts when her teeth are coming through!

davidtennantsmistress · 24/06/2012 20:49

yes he's had 4 today, (v bad mummy! lol) and seems to like about 20oz of milk between 6.30 pm and 5.30am, having 1 oz 2 max at a time.

only saving grace is if they all come through together in one go then it will be quicker he's settle & slep.

Anbesol liquid - it's a topical painkiller so fine to use with calpol etc. I don't see an issue with half a dose of medised (disclaimer - I am not a dr!). My two both had it from 6 months when they needed it.

KLou111 · 24/06/2012 21:39

Thankfully my ds (same age, I know you from another thread!) only has 4 teeth at the mo, number 5 on the way. They've never bothered him too much, but have you tried freezing a banana and giving it to him to chew on?
I bought an amber anklet, but I didn't use it as I didn't need it, but a friend said it helped her sanity!!
