Baby started solids and poo won't come out of nappies.....help!!!!

I have just started using cloth nappies and been really pleased with them but we have got a bit of a horrid poo situation:

I have started my DS on solids and although his poos are still fairly loose they are changing from his normal breastfeeding poos. Previously I was able to put the pooey nappy and fleece liner straight into the bucket then when I washed them all the poo would be washed off.

Now there are little bits of undigested food in his poo but it is still quite runny so I can't flick the poo off the liner into the toilet. I still put the nappy and liner into the bucket and dry pail. Then I do a rinse, 60 degree wash and a final rinse. I only use about 20ml of powder.

My problem is that the bits of undigested food seem to 'stick' to the nappies and then they get all over the other nappies and liners in the wash. Some nappies are very badly stained but I know they are clean. With the bits of food they just don't seem very clean to me and it's a bit disgusting but I then pick the bits of pooey food off with my nails Blush

So, should I soak the pooey nappies and liners in a separate bucket to get the food/poo a bit looser? Should I soak the whole lot of nappies? Maybe I should wash them on a 90 degree wash to get them super clean? I don't know what to do but the food bits are getting really horrid.....I presume that once his poo really changes and becomes more solid I will be able to flick it off the liner into the toilet? Confused

Please help, the poo/food bits are freaking me out now!!!

Hi. We've used cloth nappies (Motherease all-in-ones) for nearly two years now and we use the paper-type nappy liners inside the nappy, even when using an extra cloth liner at night time. These catch most of the solids, although if we don't get the nappy changed almost immediately then the solids still get onto the cloth. Tbh, this seems to happen most of the time and it's an unpleasant job to scrape stuff off with loo roll into the loo, but at least most of it is caught in the paper liner, which we tip into the loo and flush away. We've tried various makes of liner and found the more papery ones better for staying in place - there are some very soft ones which feel like very fine fabric but still claim to be flushable but they just ended up in a ball inside the nappy! If you want, I can find out the make of ours and post up the details.
I would also use more washing powder and possibly soak in nappy san (or whatever it's called) or tea tree oil. We've found our nappies are getting stained at the edges where they've been soiled and that worries me, but I don't know how to get it out.

Sunlight will get stains out.

I go for flick as much as you can and any you can't get off that way you hold firmly and flush!

oh I sympathise! Even though DS2 is nearly 17 months now, his poo is worse than a baby who is just beginning to wean. Nursery is constantly telling me he has diarrhoea, and I have to reassure them it's not and after one year of looking after him they're accepting that he does disgustingly wet poos now.

I have lost a fleece liner [sob] today because it was far too gross to clean out, and I'm very precious about my lovely fleece.

I usually pick the his runny poo off his fleece by using the wipes I'd use for his bum, or toilet rolls, and my hands are normally just covered in poo. It's such a waste when using toilet paper though.

I've read about diaper sprays or something like that.. but keep thinking surely at 13, 14....17 months(!) his poo would surely be solid by now?! So never bothered with it. Perhaps you could look into that if you've got a long way to go with nappies?

We use disposable liners whenever we think he might poo, but they're not that great keeping his bottom dry. Plus he poos at random times unlike my DS1 so it rarely works.

A lot of people I know their baby's poo get nice and solid by 7 months + (I know I've changed them) so hopefully it won't last too long for you. :)
