When did your child reject comfort item?

This isn't a problem, just wondering what the experiences of others have been...

My daughter (2.4) has recently started saying she doesn't want her two formerly beloved and essential soft toys at night and at naps. She has had both of them since a really young age, and they were an important part of her settling herself at night (she'd talk to them before sleep, I've seen her playing with them silently when she wakes in night etc).

Now, more nights than not, she doesn't want one or both of them, and insists on them being put on the floor!

It does make me feel a bit wistful... but of course would be quite convenient to not have to remember to take them away with us etc.

Is this is a phase or is she really growing out of her comforters already? It seems really young. My brother had his til he went to uni!

My DS2 had a doggy which was much loved and went everywhere with him. One day when he was about 3 we went to the school fair and they were doing a lucky dip and he won a purple dog. He then announced that he did not want his old doggy any more but liked new doggy. I was devastated. I thought his old doggy was lovely and full of memories but he was not bothered. To this day he likes new doggy better but not as much as he used to like his original doggy.

My daughter is 10. I occasionally find her blankie in her bed in the morning when I'm making it (it is usually relegated to a shoebox in the closet) Grin. My 7 year old still has his blankie at night and Mr. 5 has his at night and when he's very tired.

My 15 y.o. DD puts her cuddly Stitch (Lilo & Stitch) into bed & tucks it in each morning so that he will be there when she goes to bed. She's had him 7 years. Mind you up till she got him she had a new favourite every year - 2 different Pooh bears, a frog, a snow leopard, an elephant... I'll be so sad if she grows out of Stitch!

My 8 yo DTs are tucked up in bed with the teddies we bought for them the day I had my first scan. We still get a few tears and sniffles if one gets left at Grandma's.

I've had more a heart stopping 'fuck where's the teddy' moments than I care to remember. I'd be encouraging her to give them if I were you.

At around 2, IIRC about a month or two after his second birthday, DS1 started throwing his previously essential monkey out of the cot at the start of every sleep. He's never had a comfort object since.

Simba gets lobbed violently out of the cot every night before DS settles to sleep. We always put him back (its a game I think) and I guarantee if we look in later on they are cuddled up together. He's always on the floor in the morning though.

He doesn't ask for Simba at all during the day but if we do go anywhere where he's likely to get tired (like a wedding or a long car journey) then Simba comes and he grips him tight like a lifebelt.

My DD took her beloved teddy with her to uni Smile Years later Ted is still on her pillow...
