Co-sleeping and skin-to-skin

Apologies if this counts as a sleep issue rather than a bf one ? but I knew there?d be people here who had experience of giving newborns skin-to-skin at night. :)

I want to co-sleep with DC2 who?s due in December. How do you manage to have skin-to-skin with the baby whilst still keeping you (and them) warm?

I co-sleep with my DS, but I didn?t start from birth and he was always in a sleeping bag. I?d like to be able to start with DC2 snuggled up a bit closer if possible.

With DS I used blankets up to my waist and then wore about 6 layers on top, including a hoodie. The room is a cold loft room (usually a chilly 14 degrees in winter), although I imagine we?ll have the heating on a lot more when DC2 is tiny.

I?m planning on getting some double sized cotton cellular blankets, as the blankets I used before kept coming untucked as they were only single sized. How many might I need?

hello angel

I don't know about how many blankets you would need... a lot probably! but I coslept with DS from birth and arranged the bedding thusly: he would have his own cellular blankets to keep him warm next to me. I would have my duvet to keep me warm with DH. how we slept together was by folding down the duvet so it tucked around DS's feet - but I would roll the duvet UNDER itself, so it didn't ping back up :) Then we were both warm, under seperate covers that suited each of our needs, but able to cuddle together. he would cootch into me and BF whenever etc but my duvet couldn't fall on him at all. As with anything it takes a bit of skill and time to get it just-so but was a grand, safe arrangement.

Thanks. :) I'm wary of using the duvet at all - I didn't with DS till he was 12 months - but maybe I'll consider it earlier this time.

I think we'll just have to have the heating on more, but I dislike sleeping in a warm room in winter when I can't have the windows open for ventilation. It'd be much easier with a summer baby! Wink

Actually, I expect it'll partly depend on whether he wants to be swaddled or not. DS1 couldn't really sleep without being swaddled until 5.5 months, so I'm braced for a second baby like that.
