Sleep issues with 4-week-old baby

Hi there - it's perhaps too early to expect my baby at 4 weeks to be sleeping long chunks of the night, but at the moment, she is sleeping (reasonably) well during the day, and then waking at roughly 2-hour intervals throughout the night. Last night, it was even less, and she woke every hour... and every time i put her back in her cot, she fussed a great deal and found it very hard to settle, and sometimes she simply didn't, and I succumbed and bf her.

I'm sure this topic has been done to death on mumsnet, but i'm just at a bit of a loss on how to get her to sleep through the night - not all the way through, of course, but for three to four hours at a time. I guess part of the problem is that she is confusing night with day, but we've tried playing with her more during the day, and quietening things down in the evening, but to little avail. But she also seems uncomfortable (arching her back, writhing), although she isn't crying that much, just making noise. I find her quite difficult to burp at nighttime, and sometimes stop trying after five minutes or so, but perhaps i should persevere..

Anyway, if anyone has any pointers or tips on how to extend her nighttime sleep, they would be very much appreciated..

btw. babies generally start to need about 3 naps in the day once they stop the constant sleeping newborn thing - morning midday and a short one late afernoon - dont keep her up in the day when she is sleepy - it will make her overtired. which could also explain he writhing etc when you put her down. hold her, rock her, sling her...

sling saved my life at that point actually - my partner put ds in sling and walked around for an hour...

sorry - one last thought - not sure what you mean by 'succumbing' to feeding - her stomach is absolutely tiny and feeds almost constantly are normal at that age - definitely every hour and a half would be normal for a 4 week old ...

It does get better - at 8 weeks I suddenly realised I could feed DS 2 and a half to 3 hourly ....but it was much more a few weeks ago. just feed and if hat doesn work she is probably over tired and the sling might be the answer....

Thank you all - some very useful tips. And for the reassurance. It sounds from what people have said that it starts to work itself out a bit as they get a little older.
the other thing i forgot to mention (although actually it's only really been manifesting itself in last few days) is that after fairly prolonged feeds, usually in the evening, she has started to vomit some or all of it up - i wondered if that was because she was eating too much, but am obviously loath to deny her if she appears hungry still.
Meanwhile, i think i shall try infacol!

Poss reflux or changes in your diet?? Keep an eye on it. My DD used to scream the place down if I laid her down after a feed. Spent ages winding her but shed just howl. Dr diagnosed reflux but now I think it might have been a bit hasty and that she had bad wind still trapped. TBS, I know some mums have had an awful time with reflux.
