Dentinox making it worse?

Has anyone used Dentinox for colic? I'm trying it with 3 week old DS after no success with Infacol. It says not to give more than 6 times a day so am tending to give it just in the evenings and through the night when he's most affected. I've noticed that he's a lot more unsettled after I've given it after a feed than when I haven't given it. He gets upset and seems very uncomfortable and nothing I do makes any difference. This lasts about half an hour. When I don't give it he tends to settle quicker ( usually falls asleep on me when feeding ) though still gets upset later on. Has anyone else had the same problem? He still doesn't seem to bring any wind up ( though does get hiccups! ) so was wondering if it's actually making the trapped wind worse? He's also more sicky after he's had it, hardly surprising as it stinks so god knows what it tastes like! Just wondering if I should persevere with it or give up and try something else ( again! ) He's currently screaming his head off after I fed him over half an hour ago, hate that he's obviously in pain and nothing I do seems to help him :(

It may be that he's suffering with silent reflux if he gets hiccups frequently and gets distressed after feeds. Try keeping him sat upright for a good half hour after feeds (laying them down too soon can make the milk come back up) and maybe elevate his cot mattress slightly at the head end. If the milk is coming back up and he's swallowing it back down it will be causing him discomfort. May not be the problem but worth considering.

Gripe water worked best for my son. Infacol used to make it worse. I think it coalesced the bubbles into one big one that still went downwards but hurt even more Sad

I really feel for you OP as I found my sons colic very hard and he was in a lot of pain. It began to improve at 10 weeks old.

Dentinox helped DS along with Colief. On its own it didn't make much difference. It doesn't sound like it's working for you. My HV and GP helped me through the different options for colic but in the end I think it was cranial osteopathy that helped (or he grew out of it, I'll never know!).

I was wondering about silent reflux Jac1978, when he's in his cot I can hear what sounds like regurgitating/swallowing and he seems to have digestive discomfort in general. I'm already trying to keep him upright after a feed ( great fun in the early hours when we both just want to go back to sleep! ) and have propped up his cot, though maybe not enough.
HV recommended colief if he hadn't improved in a week so that might be the next step. Though from what people have told me I might just have to wait til he grows out of it, but 2 months is a long time!

You should speak to your GP if it is reflux. Gaviscon infant would help a great deal.

DS cried for 2 to 3 hours a night, and took ages to settle after night feeds. The feeding didn?t seem to help or calm him at night and I felt like I was at my wits end, in fact I used to make the mistake when he screamed of thinking he was still hungry, so I?d try and feed him on top of the wind and then he?d scream harder and then do a massive burp and bring the feed up, so I spoke to my health visitor about it at the time and her tips to try were:

Warm bath covering tummy.
Lying him on his tummy with a warm (not hot) hot water bottle under him to soothe tummy.
Cycling his legs whilst he's on his back.
Holding feet palm to palm and rocking legs sideways, whilst lying on floor or lap.
Or scooping with right hand down his right side whilst holding feet palm to palm.
Or rocking him face down well supported on legs.

She also said don't eat anything that gives you wind such as brocolli, cabbage, caffeine, cauliflower, garlic or other stimulants. However I don?t believe there is actually any evidence that what you eat affects your milk. Certainly Tiktok on mumsnet also I believe says this (from memory) however I hadn?t started posting properly on mumsnet at this point, so I gave it a try. She said if none of the above did work I could try buying Colief drops from a chemist and mixing in with a feed by expressing it first, as she said sometimes colic is caused by a lactose intolerance. I never needed to buy these in the end. But I have heard good things about them.

I found that out of all of those the cycling the legs was particularly good and giving him gripe water after every feed straight away really soothed his tummy. I had to do it every feed though without fail.

The warm bath in a quiet room was also a real help. Every night at the time he started to get more agitated I would put him in the bath, in a bath cradle and keep putting warm water on his tummy and every now and then top the bath up with warm water, so it wouldn't get too cold for him. Once or twice he was in the bath for 2 hours in the early days as it was really calming for him, my poor DD watched a lot of CBeebies in those 10 weeks, much to my shame, as he was a Winter baby. Once he started doing big yawns and it was bedtime, I'd take him out into a dark bedroom and change him and BF him quietly and then often he'd go to sleep straight away. This was a huge relief after I discovered how much this worked for him. In the day I'd keep him up for only 90 mins only before putting back down for a nap and this also helped.

Remember things will get better soon, this too shall pass. I found it so hard to see the wood from the trees at this stage. My tips may or may not work, as every baby is different but there?s my thoughts. There is some great advice on mumsnet, I wish I?d used it when DS was tiny.

Thanks for your post, some good tips to try there. Have tried cycling his legs and also tried laying him over my legs on his tummy but both these are hard to do when baby is rigid and screaming! So will definitely try a longer tummy bath and warm heat pack on his tummy. And continue my search for gripe water! Going to see the health visitor again on Thursday so will see what she thinks about reflux and make a drs appointment if necessary. That's a point, must also register DS with the Dr first! I sometimes think the HV and MW play down my concerns a bit, just keep telling me 'oh yeah, that's normal'. Will have to be a bit more persistent! Or possibly I am just overreacting!
Thanks for the support everyone, I don't have many friends in RL that have babies, or if they do they didn't suffer from colic!

I bought mine in Boots, it's in a glass bottle.

A screaming unhappy baby is horrid and not normal. It's distressing as a mum and you feel so helpless Sad

I agree with what other mums wrote about how hard it is. I have a lot of anxiety around having another baby due to the early days with DS, I'm not sure I could take it again. Plus I was assured by HV that it would pass at 12 weeks so I had that end point in mind - but it took almost 6 months before it got easier. I felt kind of cheated!

As supportive as RL friends are, if they haven't had babies with colic they can't comprehend how difficult it is.

I promise it gets easier though! I appreciate DS' chilled out nature so much now...
