Slack Mum

Does anyone else have a DC 2.8 who is still in nappies, using a sippy cup, having a bottle at bedtime and not using cutlery (or even eating much at all). She is very happy but just doesn't seem ready to move forward with any of the above. Brilliant in every other way, so haven't worried too much.. am i a very slack Mum?

I don't know whether you are a slack mum. My DTs at the same age are in nappies at night time only, use cutlery, eat well and don't have milk at bedtime.

I was surprised how quickly they picked things up once I decided it was 'time' to do something (like the potty training).

My DS is two and three months, we are just thinking about starting potty training now (worried, as he seems to actively dislike the idea), he drinks out of sports bottles or tumblers with a straw, but still likes a baby bottle for his milk at bedtime. He does use cutlery and eats a lot. He is also still in a cot, not his toddler bed (both are in his room!) because he just doesn't want to sleep in it. he likes his cot.
We have a three month old DD so when she was born we wanted to keep everything we could the same so there wasn't too much change happening at once so we didn't push anything, but we will need the cot soon as DD is going to be too big for her bassinette!
I think with some things that are harmless and comforting - bedtime bottle, etc - it's ok to baby them. With potty training, if DS hates it we will stop and try again in a few months - so if you are slack, I am too! As long as she is happy I wouldn't worry.

DD will be 3 in a few weeks time. We are potty training with limited success (she doesn't mind being wet and/or too absorbed in whatever she is doing to take herself to the toilet). She LOVES her cot and I am pretty sure won't give up her bottle until her little brother 1.6 does.

I am not stressing about any of it.

My son is 3 tomorrow.

The Bottle Fairy just came last night to take his bottles. So far he's okay with it.

Potty training was going well, then he stopped using the potty, except at nursery.

His cutlery use is hit or miss.

What do these posts show?

All kids are different.

Nappies be at 2.8 sounds quite normal. Give her a chance (if the stupid weather improves) to be nappy free in the garden. DD got potty training very quickly at just before age 3. She was the last in our group to potty train but someone has to be the last. She wasn't dry at night till age 4.

Sippy cups are fairly sensible if your kids like to walk round with drinks.

I would probably dream up something to get rid of the bottle because it is so associated with babyhood. She can still have a milky drink at bedtime. Maybe a nice cup with princesses/animals on it?? I remember seeing my neighbour's child with a bottle at 7 and thought it was a bit Shock

FWIW I don't think you are at all slack. These things can get awfully competitive. In the greater scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.

Hi all, Thanks for the replies - I was half expecting a slating! I have just been going with the flow with DD, but someone's comments recently made me wonder if i shouldn't be more concerned. Verity we were planning potty training this summer as we thought we'd just spend alot of time in the garden with no clothes on - but the weather has got in the way! She doesn't seem ready yet, as she's not really aware of when she goes and doesn't seem bothered by being wet. We have tried with cutlery and all eat together but she prefers her fingers - and cos she's not a great eater i've just been thankful when something does go in her mouth and haven't stressed too much about how it got there! Someone reminded me recently that they do all get the hang of it eventually and she won't be stil in nappies and using a sippy cup when she's 10 - so to just chill out. Tee so right - they are all different and I only ever worry when i start comparing.
