My DS has always been a bit dependent on others for entertainment, but it's getting a bit too much like hard work now! So far this holiday he has been camping with friends for 3 days, been to a friend's birthday sleepover, had a playdate here and is seeing another friend tomorrow. This is all well and good but when these things aren't happening-he mooches around looking utterly depressed!

He doesn't want to read, will play endless board games if DH or I play them with him, doesn't seem terribly interested in drawing/writing/any electronic devices. He even said today that he wishes he was at school as he doesn't like the holidays-this is heartbreaking :(

He has two younger siblings who bod around just entertaining themselves and will play on their own or with anyone. We went to the park on Wednesday with a friend and her kids and the younger two just found some people to play with, but DS just sat next to me the whole time as he said he had noone to play with-it's driving me bonkers!

He has given up cubs as he didn't like the new leader and doesn't seem particularly into anything else. He has good friends at school who he likes spending time with but seems utterly incapable of spending any time occupying himself.

Has anyone got any suggestions of what to do with him? Hobby ideas!!?

I do sympathise but firstly I would say count yourself lucky that he has had quite a few friends to occupy his time these hols, not all children have that.

It is maddening when they just mooch around, my DS (13) has been similar today waiting for the Euro football to start. I bunged him in the kitchen this morining to make a batch of biscuits and get him from under my feet. The weather has not helped as usualy these hols. If I were you I wouldn't put myself out to be available to play all the time as he will not get used to playing on his own or having to think of something to do himself. All you can do is suggest, not force, the other thing you can try is leaving games or books lying around in the hope that they will be picked up. Good luck!

Sorry I didn't suggest anything did I? Does he like any sports? Is he creative, will he make a model of something for example? What about collecting something? Doe he read? Does he have a pet?

Some kids are just like that- my youngest is not remotely sporty and has always avoided clubs of any sort. So I gave him a choice of 2 things as I reasoned it would be good for him to socialise a bit more.

He chose athletics, to be honest he's pretty hopeless but he enjoys it and mixes with their kids

Mine like hanging out with friends, they don't have 'hobbies' as such, just play footie etc. I book them into clubs with their friends on holidays or send them out to play. Don't think they would want to go to the park with younger siblings, with friends, yes, but siblings, big no
