What do baby boys wear for christenings?

DS will be 4/5 months. I don't like that thing of dressing little boys as little men (in suit, etc), it gives me the slightly heebie-jeebies. But clearly I can't put him in a long white dress, it not being the Victorian era. It is going to be a fairly informal do, but I suppose he can't wear dungarees... What other options are there?

He can wear whatever you want him to wear.

A white romper suit is nice. Sailor suits used to be quite popular, not sure if that is still the case.

If you have a family baptism gown, then it is fine to use that, even if long and lacy.

I got a cream christening suit from mothercare for Ds

There are no rules though, he can wear anything you want

Banderchang · 07/06/2012 16:32

I agree that babies in suits is cringe-worthy. The important thing is that he is comfortable. DS was 8 months when he was christened and it was winter. I got him a nice pair of cords (elasticated waist) and a thick jumper which he then wore for Xmas and a few other festive parties.

It was dark blue jeans and a jumper his nana had knitted for my 7 mo DS. I just wanted him in clothes I liked :)

mathanxiety · 07/06/2012 20:23

I put all mine in the lacy family christening robe, DS as well as the DDs. It's quite an heirloom.

xkcdfangirl · 07/06/2012 20:24

If you want to e traditional, there is nothing wrong with a boy being christened in a long white robe (so long as it isn't too frilly) - DS was christened in a robe made from my wedding dress, very traditional indeed.

If you want to be more modern, then anything that looks smart will be just fine!

Chubfuddler · 07/06/2012 20:25

DS wore a proper christening robe. much better than some ghastly little suit from mothercare or similar. Ugh.

FamiliesShareGerms · 07/06/2012 20:29

DS wore white dungarees my mum made with a light blue cashmere jumper she knitted.

Mamas and Papas and some of the concessions in John Lewis often do light coloured clothes that could work as christening clothes

MrsFlippingHeck · 07/06/2012 22:59

Boots have a nice white cord dungarees outfit at the moment.

madwomanintheattic · 07/06/2012 23:14

Ds wore the same christening robe as both of his sisters. It's very common, not sure where you've been hanging out to view it as a Victorian and outdated thang! Grin it isn't a family heirloom either - it has only been used for the three of them. If they ask if they can use it for their kids later then that's fine, but it's entirely the parents decision.

If you have any grandiose ideas towards using the same outfit for subsequent dcs, gowns are eminently practical. Otherwise, you have to time subsequent christenings v carefully. Grin

Whatever you want.

We do have a family christening robe that dates back to the 1800s, and I know other families have bought ones more recently, so there's certainly no rule against them, but no rule that says you have to use one either.

Flowerface · 08/06/2012 12:28

We had DD christened and she just wore a simple white cotton dress from Gap or somewhere... So we don't have a christening gown to pass on!!

3 m.o. DS wore a (fairly casual) romper suit, socks & cardigan - just one of his normal outfits.

AngelDog · 08/06/2012 13:50

That was a 'smart' outfit for us, though - he was in babygrows the rest of the time.

ClaireBunting · 08/06/2012 14:35

What do other families at your church do?

BartletForAmerica · 08/06/2012 14:38

DS was in a shirt and navy blue dungarees for his dedication.

supernannyisace · 08/06/2012 14:45

DS wore an outift purchased especially. I still have it (he is now 14).

A bit like this www.littlecherubsclothing.co.uk/boysclothing/rompers-dungarees/rompers/button-on-romper-mayoral-1208_4-6-months-sand.html

I dressed my DS in the same long white lace Christening 'dress' that my DDs wore (and my DH and his grandfather etc etc). He looked adorable and the photos are very traditional. Most christenings I have been to for baby boys they have been dressed in something similar (it definitely doesn't have to be old or inherited), except where they are Christened when a bit older and toddling, then it's harder and I have seen white sailor suits or page boy type stuff.
