Registered Disabled? What does this mean?

I became disabled around Christmas following a serious illness. Now we're looking at festival tickets for the summer - small, easy to manage festivals!! - and they all seem to offer a discount if you are "registered disabled". I've had my driving licence taken away, have a blue badge and got DLA without even seeing ATOS, (I'm a miracle case!) but I don't think I'm on a register? I have a rehab team and SS are involved with some adaptations to the house for me, but I don't know what proof of status I should offer?

When we went to Edinburgh Zoo to see the pandas, dh got in free as my carer as he was pushing my wheelchair. They didn't ask for proof - me sitting in the chair seemed to do!

Does anyone know? I also posted this in chat for quick replies if possible.

You're registered disabled Smile

These days all it means is 'can prove they have a disability'.

You will find that all social services have to allow you to register your disability, and you get a yellow card. It used to be a requirement, now it's up to you. But, it won't make any difference to you, your DLA letter will suffice for proof.

Thanks!

It was the DLA that made me realise. I mean I already knew but I was blocking it out! But when you get awarded top rate mobility and medium rate care purely on doctors letters, then 95% of you goes "brilliant, got it without a fight!" and the other 5% of you goes "just how stuffed am I?"

That is so true. DD1 was 3 when we first applied for DLA for her. She was awarded HRC without fuss. I opened the letter, cried that she's got it, then cried because that shouldn't be Sad

Well done for getting the award. Sorry you need it Sad

I know I need it! I can't walk without support! I need a supermarket trolley to walk, otherwise it's me in the wheelchair! I have a blue badge. I haven sensation in my hands, legs below knees or feet, face from nose down. I can't "find" my hands or feet if I can't see them (great test - I can't clap my hands with my eyes closed!). I can't walk any distance. I have a wheelchair for shopping etc ....

Life is much more complicated than it was 6 months ago. Hard! But I cope, CID I have to!!

That's no easy change to make. I hope you're being looked after x

Sorry to hear this. I had no idea, but I did think I hadn't "seen" you around lately. Is your condition likely to improve? Take care of yourself

weegiemum · 07/06/2012 17:57

I'm looked after well!

But AP, yes, it's hard. I get on ok but yes, I'm the longstanding weegiemum!

I'm doing ok but my symptoms come and go every week/month as my hospital treatments change.

It's hard for me. My family, especially my dh are FAB. but the benefits are great and I only get what I deserve.!

And it won't improve. The nerves in my feet and arms are dead and not coming back. If I'm lucky, it won't get any worse. But my numbness will never get much better.

I went to a small festival last year and just had to send my proof of DLA to get my free carers ticket. We had a great time but a word of warning - check out the disabled camping facilities. We had planned to camp in the disabled area but it turned out it was further away than the main camping, and up a hill to get into the festival! Not sure whose bright idea that was! We stayed in the main area and it was fine. I even managed 3 nights in a tent using my bipap so was really pleased, as i thought I'd never go camping again after I got ill. Hope you have a fun time :)

I've been reg disabled for 40 years, owing to complicated combination of internal medical problems. Apart from eating correctly and taking enough exercise , it hasn't been a problem. But now I have a separate problem - the same as this poster - lack of sensation in my limbs, which is restricting movement. Is there a register kept somewhere, and should I report my recent change in health ?

Witsend1234 · 25/03/2019 07:44

There is no register of disability.
