Playing Outside in Socks

Do you let your children go out in their socks?

My daughter is seven and hates shoes, comes home from school, kicks off her shoes and is off outside to play in her socks, which is not a problem. Where we live, a lot of the kids especially the girls do the same.

Some people make a big deal of the fact she isn't wearing shoes when they come round or we go round to others. She gets into trouble with her child minder if she takes her shoes off outside.

no, I would prefer bare feet to wasting socks, but mine tend to put shoes on if they are outside.

debka · 06/06/2012 21:08

Shoes or barefeet here. It just knackers socks playing outside with no shoes.

Octaviapink · 07/06/2012 15:02

Barefoot is fine.

It ruins the socks so a big no no with me. My kids drive me mad coming off the trampoline and not putting shoes back on or taking socks off, I end up collecting damp socks from all around the garden (sometimes they turn up weeks later). Bare foot is fine on grass.

hillbilly · 07/06/2012 16:12

Shoes or barefoot here too.

She doesn't always trash h er socks, but even if she does it is cheaper then her trashing her shoes.

No. I am constantly nagging occsionally have to remind ds to put shoes on or take socks off outside. It just ruins them. Shoes are designed to be worn outside, socks aren't

EmmaY1 · 08/06/2012 16:51

Very true, does not stop shoes getting ruined and scuffed though especially if they are cheap ones.

When DD has her tomboy moments she can end up looking as if she ha been dragged behind a horse and most of her clothes are trashed

Shoes or barefoot is my preference. DS often wanders out in socks. I lay down the law when he wants to play football tho Grin

UnChartered · 08/06/2012 16:55

noooo
socks worn outside without shoes are a magnet for twigs and small stones which are always shed over my weekly vacuumed carpet Angry

ReportMeNow · 08/06/2012 16:55

I understand, it's kinda barefoot but warmer!

But the socks do end up permanently grubby. Will she wear Crocs or really soft ballet pumps?

ReportMeNow · 08/06/2012 16:58

Or even ballet shoes with the elastic to hold them on?

tittytittyhanghang · 08/06/2012 17:06

No, but he does it anyway! Shocking the state his socks come it, and they end up threadbare on the front soles and heels! On the other hand it makes sorting out ds socks and dp socks in the washing a lot easier :)

BackforGood · 08/06/2012 17:09

Yes, but if they are going to play out, then they go out in trainers or wellies, not school shoes or at least, that's the plan.

valiumredhead · 08/06/2012 19:04

I have given up nagging, I have decided there are bigger things to worry about than ds going out in his socks. I feel strangely liberated now Grin

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2012 19:06

My 7yo likes to go outside in socks, but it's wet on the drive, and muddy on the grass = stained socks.

This is why she has crocs.

Buntingbunny · 08/06/2012 19:10

Next door must have got fed up of me shouting "Bare feet or crocs" in the direction of the trampoline.

Despite this all school socks are grey not white.

Meglet · 08/06/2012 19:16

It wouldn't worry me. The DC's have ruined the odd pair of socks when the garden has been muddy, hardly the end of the world.

gastrognome · 08/06/2012 20:22

Yuck, wet socks! Can't stand the thought of wearing just socks outside so my DDs have the choice of shoes or barefoot. Shoes can be flip flops or crocs or whatever, am not fussed. But definitely not just socks.

EmmaY1 · 08/06/2012 20:28

White socks go yellow/grey anyway Vanish often comes to the rescue of white socks as well as dirty dresses, tops, skirts that have had a hard day.

Poundland sell three pairs of white socks for a pound, so not a fortune

Usually barefoot or shoes here, but I'm not unknown for socks outside.
But then I'll also take my shoes off at work, and not put them back on to go to the printer.
DS2 is yet to wear shoes. He crawls and cruises round in socks wherever - garden, beach, playground. Nursery found it most strange my 11 month old didn't have a pair of shoes.

ZuleikaD · 08/06/2012 21:02

Nursery nagged us until we finally bought dd shoes at age 16 months. At age 3 she still doesn't wear them most days. In fact I reckon she's worn them for about ten minutes this week. Wellies or barefoot.

HandMadeTail · 08/06/2012 21:08

I'm Australian, and people there often go barefoot. Children will go to a friend's house, and then forget to put their shoes back on before they go home.

But I have to say, I prefer bare feet to socks outside. It's easier to wash feet than socks (and as for throwing ruined socks away, they might be cheap at Poundland, but it's not very environmentally friendly, is it?)

EmmaY1 · 09/06/2012 12:59

Love Australia, why are you in the UK - I assume you are - can I use your passport so I can go and live in Oz?

I just don't think socks get ruined outside as most people think here, OK they get dirty but they wash, maybe the soles don't always but then that isn't important.

And even when they do need throwing away they become dusters or rags. Cut the foot bit of knee high socks and they go on the end the mop and are great for my wooden floors.
