Need a small bag for washable wipes

I'm finding it easier and cheaper to use washable wipes when we're out and about. At the moment I'm using resealable freezer bags to keep them in, but I'd like something more substantial, waterproof and ideally a bit nicer than something emblazoned with ASDA across it!

Anyone seen anything that would do? Any WAHM shops have something like this - have tried Minki but the stinkiminki is massive. Preferably online as I hate trawling the shops looking for one teeny item

Dont know if this one by Nature Babies would be the right size, says it takes 2-3 nappies. I guess if it's too big you could do up the drawstring and fold it?

mcmudda · 21/02/2006 17:03

That's the sort of thing - thanks Tatties

Was actually trying to justify buying a new waffle nappy, might just have to add that on at the same time

How about a tupperware container?

Oooh go on McMudda, you know you want to

(What is the new waffle nappy BTW?)

mamman · 21/02/2006 21:18

I use a small cotton bottoms tote bag - got it from the co-op but sure you could find it on line.

Gem13 · 21/02/2006 21:23

Not what you're asking but I just have them loose (and dry) in the nappy bag and wet them with water when I'm changing. You usually change near some taps. With DS (who was born in the hot summer of 2002) I just used water from the bottle of water I was carrying with me.

just out of interest mcmudda, what do you use? I've got IKEA washcloths which I cut into four and hemmed with the zigzag stitch on the sewing machine. I'm a wimp though and use disposable wipes when I'm out

Miaou · 21/02/2006 22:51

(which I keep in a resealable freezer bag )

mcmudda · 21/02/2006 23:01

i had a bad sewing machine experience in Home Ec many moons ago, so have wimped out and have a mixture of Minki wipes (terry on one side/fleece on the other) and Ellas House (some just hemp, some fleece/hemp).

All seem to be nappy offcuts so the fabrics are really nice and bright - rainbows/paw prints/swirls/tartan(!) etc.

The EH ones are a better finish tbh, some of my Minki ones are looking a bit the worse for wear. The double-sided-ness works brilliantly on evil poo and jammy faces They're hand sized rather than flannel sized.

And don't knock the freezer bags - I'm just looking for an excuse to spend money

I used flannels last time but am stockpiling micro fibre cloths for this one. Soft and light and nearly dry from the machine (sounds like an advert!!). Am using as night time boosters too...

mcmudda · 21/02/2006 23:10

LL - where do you get them from? I'm fed up with dd's boosted bum not fitting in her sleepsuits!

Katymac · 21/02/2006 23:20

Can i ask about washable wipes

I'm a childminder and have just organised separate flannels for each child to use as a towel......iyswim

I was wondering if I could get lots of small cloths have a bucket with clean dry ones in, then just wet them and use them to wipes hands, faces etc then another bucket to put them in until they get washed

Do you think that would work?

mcmudda · 21/02/2006 23:45

Katymac - now I've got about 60 wipes I only use the washable ones for face and hands (as well as bums). Saving a fortune on packets of baby wipes!

The Ella's House site is here look under liners, boosters and wipes. I bet the colours would go down well with the children. The wipes will wash at 60 deg without fading.

Do a google for "washable baby wipes" and loads more sites will come up - most nappy manufacturers seem to be doing them now - some wipes are plain, others more colourful.

I'd need 4 per child maybe 8 (thinking one to wash hands before snack or meal and one after - so B/F, Snack, L&D) is 8 times 9 children is 72 times 3 days......hmmm

I think I'd better make my own, on the basis of over 200 needed

How many would I get in the washing machine at one time?

How big are they?

Tatties · 22/02/2006 10:23

Microfibre cloths - Tesco value - 3 for 99p IIRC...

Tatties, think they may even be 89P for 3!!!! Bargain.
I really like them as liners as they are so small and they wash much better than flannels which I used to use.
Katymac - you could try these as facecloths too as they would be dry ready for the next day overnight. You could mark sets with indelible ink in the corner for each child. Do they really have to have their own even if they are washed at 60? I remember your name from your post re changing to cloths for your charges - any update?

vkone · 22/02/2006 15:18

I got 10 wipes plus a v handy bag from Nappy Nation The bag is small but comes with a larger back in a separate pocket that can take 2 nappies as well.

I found the best thing for hand wipes was cut up fleece, I keep them in a pile in the kitchen next to the sink and wet them under the tap, as soon as they are used I chuck them into the washing machine as you can pretty much wash them with anything. Once washed I put them straight back on the pile as they don't really need to be dried.

laundrylover · 22/02/2006 15:19

Yeah fleece would work well for Katymac wouldn't it. Cheap and lots of colours/patterns....

Katymac · 22/02/2006 18:08

Sorry for the hijack

I'm holding fire on the nappies - but advertising that I will take children in washables (iyswim) I can't affor dto do it atm as i would need so many

But washable wipes would be the first step

mcmudda · 24/02/2006 19:34

Well after all that I bought the denim patchwork one from NatureBabies and it arrived today - just right!! Thanks Tatties

Oh and I managed to sneak a Minki Waffle into the order while I was there - haven't tried it yet, but it looks a bit odd

Tatties · 24/02/2006 22:41

Oh good McMudda I am pleased I liked the look of the Nappy Nation one myself but don't know if I can justify the expenditure!
Let me know what the Waffle is like, will you?

gingernutlover · 25/02/2006 18:47

I use a small makeup bag - think it was free with mother and baby one month but anyone with a waterproof inner would do. As long as the wipes are not soaking the zip doesn't really wick
