my ME wraps

are showing signs of loosing their waterproofness. I've had them for about 1y and they've done a fantastic job so far. But recently my 17m old has regularly wet her bodysuit and trousers between the legs (when very wet nappy), so it's clearly not wicking. Is this supposed to happen after a year of use ?

I don't think they're supposed to perish ? not been hung on radiator or put through tumble dryer? Actually since we're here, do you know if you're supposed to steer clear of fabric conditioner with them? I can't remember.

cacaboo · 21/02/2006 14:48

Think I've read somewhere that putting them throuhg the tumble drier realigns something and makes them waterproof again??

I never used fabric cond (I think you're not supposed to Lio) or put them in the dryer or on the radiator. I'm not sure what size I'm using but they're definitely not too small as they're still on the outside poppers. Hmmmm...

Hmm, sounds like grounds for getting a replacement then. Did you get them from somewhere you think would be open to this? I'm sure some of mine are over a year old and they're still fine.

you can be on the outside popper and still need the next size up. dd has quite skinny legs so never got to the largest setting but definitely need to go up a size at this age as she leaked alot.

longwaytogo · 21/02/2006 15:26

I've got the same problem and have given up using my washables as I can't work out whether I can justify buying more when at 23 months he may not be in them for very much longer.

Mine have been through the tumble drier because I forget to get them out and thats why I think they have done it.

No help really am I

fredly · 21/02/2006 15:57

thanks pesme, I'll order the next size up and see how it goes.

longwaytogo, it sounds like a shame to give up on washables at this stage, you can get cheap wraps on ebay, there are loads.

I had one go, it was a plain one which seems to be made out of lighter fabric than the printed ones. The manufacturers of PUL state that the fabric is only good for 100 washes so they will go in the end.

Could it possibly the pressure from your DDs bodysuits? I had to give up using popper-under vests with DS cos they always pressed and caused wicking.

fredly · 23/02/2006 14:39

vkone, I think the bodysuit contributes to the prob, definitely, mainly when she's wearing a booster as well. But I'd rather change her more often than stop using them.
I've ordered a bigger wrap, will see how it goes.

How about vest extenders, at least you'll get abit longer out of them, I partly gave up on them (poppered vests that is) cos I find that sort of thing way too fiddly!

They do have a lifespan - depends on how many you have & how often you wash them how long they will last. We have about 6 per size, so no problems yet (we've had all the sizes S, M, M/L, L and now XL).

I've heard a way of rescuing them is to soak in fabric conditioner, rinse and then hot tumble dry.

They do benefit from being washed in fab conditioner - for the reason that nappies don't. The fabric conditioner coats them and increases the waterproofness. I wash mine in with clothes for a more gentle wash (I wash my clothes on a quick 40 degree wash, whereas nappies get a 60 degree long wash), and air dry. I don't think they last as long with regular tumble drying.
