Alternatives to TV please!

We have just imposed a tv ban on our three DCs who are 6, 4 and 2.
Until about a year ago they only watched about 30 mins per day as I only let them watch programmes on catch up so when they were finished the tv would go off. Then DS started asking to watch CBeebies so when he came home from school they'd all watch it for an hour whilst I cooked dinner. Then they started wanting to watch it on a weekend, etc and although the tv is not on all day by any manner of means they watch far more than we're comfortable with. I readily admit that it's our fault but now it's got to the stage where they become sulky or have tantrums when we don't let them watch it.
This afternoon DS was very moody and didnt want to go outside to play because I refused his request to watch tv then DD1 (4) had a massive tantrum because she wasn't allowed to watch it. There is now a dust sheet over the tv and there it will stay until their behaviour improves but now I need ideas on what to do with them, or really what to do with DS. DDs love drawing, cutting and sticking, messy play, etc and love making things but DS has no interest in that whatsoever and is constantly telling me how bored he is. Any ideas would be much appreciated particularly as it's half term!

  1. playing dominos - my ds loves playing dominos with his grandad and its a great way to learn numbers as well
  2. playing snakes and ladders - another classic!
  3. Jigsaws
  4. bake biscuits and then decorate them
  5. go to the park for a picnic, kick about with a football and playground fun
  6. see whats going on at your local community centre/leisure centre

we have a train museum in our town and although we have been loads of times before its nice to go and see if anything new has come in, what events they have on and have a drink and a snack and then walk home. is there anything like that near you?

make tv a reward for doing other things together without bad behaviour.

Balloon tennis! We usually have a couple in our living room and the kids love to bop them about with me or each other. They make it a game to keep them in the air. Watching this thread with interest as my two only watch one hour and a half a week (on a saturday afternoon) and have done for four years now.
