if so how long? and did things change in that time? eg: lying babies on there front/back etc?

I want a big gap untill i have my dc2 - i kind of want to have to do it all again (get all the baby stuff) as next time i hope to be more stable money wise and be able to get what I want instead of opting for the cheaper stuff. I kind of feel I didnt do it right the first time, i dont know why because all my ds stuff was spot on and he wants for nothing, maybe its because my dp left for abit when ds was 4 weeks maybe thats why i question everything?

Anywayyy was your 2nd time diffrent? is every birth/baby/pregnancy diffrent?

Did you forget things from the first time round?
I dont remember much of the first year because i was so tired all the time! I can hardly remember pregnancy is that normal?!

What age is your DC1?

There have been lots of threads on here about what the 'ideal' age gap is, and the consensus is that there is no ideal gap, just whatever suits each person.

My mum had 6 years between me and my sister, and although growing up I resented my sis a bit, now we're adults we get on fine.

FWIW, my DS is 2.5 years old and I'm due DC2 in August. I like the fact that I can re-use all his clothes and toys etc for this new baby, but I think that's my personality.

I had a wonderful easy pregnancy with DS, whereas this time I've been very sick with hyperemesis and just general aches and pains I didn't have 1st time round :( Every baby is different because they are different people, well, that's what I've been told... can tell you for sure when DC2 is born in August Wink

It is perfectly normal to forget things from first time round as having a baby/toddler/child takes up lots of brain space and it's impossible to remember everything!

Do whatever suits you, your DP and your DC1. Even if you choose to never have a DC2 that's okay too.

I have 5.5 years between mine... The only thing I remember changing was the weaning age. 4 months was the guide for dc1 but by dc2 you were advised to not start weaning until 6 months. Oh, and buggys got a lot funkier. No clunky graco pushchair for dc2!

20 years Grin. Everything had changed - no more lying on tummy, no more swaddling, no more weaning at 4 months! 2nd birth was at home, pretty quick and easy, whilst first was a hospital job with lots of pethidine and stiches! I think i was much more chilled out with my first though and he was a very easy going child (and adult) as i embarrassingly put myself first and he went along with what i did. This time DD has had all my focus and attention, was in a routine from 6 months (as i went back to work). She is gorgeous, a good sleeper but much more tempermental than DS. i think i'm more anxious as a mature mum, but i'm also not wishing the time away - which i did with DS.

3-year gap. Same as me and my sister.

I still got everything new because I sold all of DC1's stuff on eBay (it was quality stuff so we got good prices) and bought new for DC2. Which I could do because DC1 had outgrown her cot and had a grown-up bed by then. She was also prepared to part with her "baby" stuff as she was a big girl.

DC2 is a very different baby to DC1 and even in that time things had changed a lot - BLW for example is now everywhere, whereas I raised DC1 on purée! I did forget a lot anyway and just trust my instincts.

6 years, and no not really, but more emphasis on the weaning age to be around 6 months... rules on making up formula were changed to the freshly boiled/left to cool for half an hour but that was when DC was about 12 months old. my kids are 12.9 and 6.11 years now.

birth was different, i had a VBAC , much more educated about birth and much more focused rather than presuming it would be fine !

I had forgotten a lot but it came roaring back pretty quick !

13 years between mine. Alot has changed.

Enjoyed first pregnancy more as i was younger, fitter and weighed less when i got preg, but enjoyed ds2 as a baby more, was older and wiser and wasnt as up tight and everything didnt have to be perfect like it did with my first.

My boys adore each other and its lovely watching them together the age gap doesnt matter

MySonIsMyWorld · 03/06/2012 20:51

I have 6 years between mine - same as between dh adn his sis who get on well.

Mine are now 7 and 22 months and adore each other. DD was born the beginning of summer holidays so we had a few weeks to get attuned. Once ds was back at school, although it meant we had to get up and out early, we could have a restful day until picking him up in the evening.

I think we made the right choice, so far at least. Ds can watch dd while I cook dinner for example and check she;s not getting into trouble. They play together well because he's old enough to understand how much littler she is and that she can't do what he does and doesn't quite get sharing yet.

Ds was a surprise and we were quite young and there was a lot of other stuff going on. He was 4 before we even began to think about having another. Before that we had settled on him being an only.

With ds being at school they both get time with us alone - her during the day and him when she's gone to bed. I think that makes a big difference.

Ds would like us to have another baby Hmm Its not happening. And dd could say ds name before saying daddy.

5.5 yrs between my two. It's a great age gap IMO.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 04/06/2012 19:21

8.4 between my two.

It wasn't planned that way, just circumstances led to it but it's worked very well.

DD was old enough to Understand she needed to wait while DS fed. Plus she used to make me tea or bounce him in his rocker when I took a shower.

Quite a few thing had changed like the feet to foot sleeping thing, weaning onto baby rice at 16 weeks, making up all bottles and leaving in the fridge etc

Plus the prams and pushchairs! DD had a graco travel system. But this time around there was such a choice.

I love the gap they have. DD has a lot of patience for her brother. He jumps up and down excitedly when the door goes after school :)

They are just now starting to clash a teeny bit. Mainly because he touches her stuff or won't leave her alone to have a bath in peace.

I'd do another big gap again if I ever had another child not blimming likely

hereshegoesagain · 08/06/2012 15:34

11 years between my two boys. Not planned, just a wobbly patch which lasted a long time.... what I hate is people asking why ...grrrrr
Different advice, which makes me laugh, just goes to show that all you need is common sense. I'm def more relaxed and less anxious about doing things right. Enjoying it immensely as it was such a long wait. Also funny that both were born the same month and that I've kept a lot of clothes/toys so it's sometimes a bit of a time warp!
I love seeing the relationship between them, it's brilliant.
It is what it is, and I'm really enjoying it !

MammaTJ · 09/06/2012 17:58

10 1/2 years between my two girls, different relationships. 54 weeks between dd2 and ds! Oh, I do extremes!
My DD2 was born with something wrong with her heart and if DD1 had had it, she would probably have died. The advances made in that 10 years meant my DD2 survived!
Weaning advice changed a lot, as did sleeping advice due to cot death.
We still put bottle in mouth, baby digested milk and poo came out of the other end as it ever was and ever will be!
