Jittering 6 week old baby

Hello All, am wondering if anyone has any experience of this. My 6 week old baby jitters in his legs and arms every day. His bottom lip also trembles some times.

JimJams - I found an interesting message that you left about this in relation to vaccination and immature central nervous systems quite a while ago. Am particularly interested in your thoughts/knowledge on this as my older boy (9 yrs) is very severely autistic. My new baby is my second child.

From birth my bub has jittered. It does seem to happen more often when he's chilly (is being undressed) or cross. Midwife was concerned in the first week and so he was seen by a paediatrician who was satisfied all was well after testing his blood sugar. Nevertheless he's still jittering on a daily basis and it's really bothering me. I was told that it would soon stop/is normal in very new babies, but 5 weeks on he's still doing it.

Am currently waiting for another paediatrician appointment that I've pushed for via my GP but am wondering if anyone can help or advise in the meantime. Is very worrying and I would really like to know what's causing it, gulp.

Thank you

Immature nerve responses? Was he prem?

aimskidooo · 30/05/2012 23:43

Thanks Mini, but no, he was 3 days overcooked and was a fairly big boy 8lb 6.

Hi, I don't really know what else to suggest. DS1 lip used to tremble if he had been crying, which I think was normal but never full on shakes.

Does your son star fish? you know when you put them down and they do that sudden movement where they throw their arms and legs out?

I'm hoping someone else might come along who knows about this or has experience of it.

My youngests lip used to judder a lot and he was referred to the hospital too however they didn't think it was anything serious and he would grow out of it, they were right and it eventually got less and less and had totally stopped by about 12 weeks of age.

I know newborns jitter when blood sugar is low, not sure about older babies though, has the blood sugar ever been tested?

aimskidooo · 01/06/2012 22:53

Thank you for your responses.

Mini he does 'starfish', but it's very different to that.

Yes Ducky, blood sugar was tested and was normal when he was a week old again because of his jittering. It hasn't been tested since.

Thanks gobbledegook1. Am so hoping that DS2 will grow out of it and all will be well. Fingers crossed for a second paed appointment next week.

ds did it for few weeks from 5 wks.. referred to paed. and by time we got there , few wks later, he'd stoppped.. never knew why. Was v noticieable at time, think it poss called, clonus, it was like when he kicked legs they'd keep shaking after he'd finished movement if you know what I mean. Was worrying - it was neurologist he was referred to - but as I say it stopped thankfully. Hope your ds is fine and you are reassured by paed.

mum2JRC · 05/06/2012 22:45

Hope you get your appointment asap.
Do not want to worry you but if he has seen a number of doctors i presume they have checked for any seizure activity like infantile spasms?

The fact he is getting it mostly when undressed suggests he feels the cold and his body reacts by jittering to increase his temperature.

It would be worth videoing the jittering so you can show the doctors when you see them.

I hope you get an answer for it soon.

mybabyweightiseightyearsold · 05/06/2012 22:52

My last baby did that - it was odd, like he had the DT's or something Very Advanced For His Age.

It settled as quickly as it started - we were told it's just his nervous system developing, remember babies' nervous systems are duff, that's why they can't do anything like tell you why they are jittering

Brill idea to video it.

Stay calm, glad you are going back though, you are right to be worried. Hope it's as foundless as mine was.

hugs.

My dd did this, I never knew how to explain it!! When I did to doctors they assumed I ment when they get startled and arms do in air!! But it wasn't!!

It was like .. God it's hard to explain .. Like yes jitters!!

Anyway she grew out of it by 3 months it had stopped!! She was prem so I'm not sure what caused it!!! She is now 17months!!!
