Kari-me too hot - alternative suggestions for a newborn?

Ds2 is 2 weeks old. I've dug out my kari-me sling but am just finding it far too hot in this weather. As well as being uncomfortable, I'm not enjoying carrying him like this as I'm so anxious about him over-heating. Can anyone suggest a sling that's suitable for a newborn? At the moment we're walking at least an hour and a half a day, doing the nursery run for ds1, so it really needs to be comfortable.

I did wonder about an ergo, as loads of people rave about them, but read on here that the infant insert was a bit of a faff.

Wouldn't he go in a pram or buggy?

Did you use the Kari Me for DC1? Did you find it uncomfy then?

I haven't used one (but have bought one for DC2 due in Aug).

Have heard a few people say that they carry their babies with just a vest and a nappy on when in the Kari Me so they don't overheat. Not sure how viable that is, but maybe worth a try if it is really warm.

I found the hug-a-bub to be the coolest stretchy wrap. You could try a gauze wrap (e.g. calin bleu).

I did use it with ds1 and loved it needles, but he was an autumn baby so we weren't getting horribly sweaty. Even with just a vest, we both seem to stick together.

cogito we could use a buggy for the nursery run, although ds2 is happier being carried tbh, but I still need a sling for hands-free time generally and with ds in particular.

OxyMoron - thanks. I'll look into the gauze ones.

Coconut, I'm also using a Kari-me with DC2 and I agree, it's too hot! Our solution is to fold down some layers of the fabric when I can, for example if I am sitting down I just have one of the shoulder straps supporting him, then fold the rest up when I'm walking around and need both hands free. Also I did consider dressing him in just a nappy. Anyway no doubt the lovely weather will change soon so it won't be a problem for long!

Second Calin bleu gauze.

Alternatively carry him in just a nappy and you with as much skin bare as possible because it allows him to transfer heat to you to dissipate it.

Connecta Solarweave carrier - SPF 50, suitable for taking in water (eg paddling pools, not swimming!)

Can't you place him in a bouncy chair or similar when you need to get on with things? He could even go flat in a pram.

Octaviapink · 31/05/2012 09:30

Cogito, the OP has already said he prefers to be carried and she's clearly looking for a carrying solution, so suggesting buggies and bouncy chairs isn't particularly helpful.

Coconut we found the Close carrier to be very good, though given that we may be done with hot weather for the summer you might find the Kari-Me to be fine now.

I have two mei tai slings which are are great in the heat, being cotton and ventilated at the sides. It's an Asian style carrier which people use in weather much warmer than what we've seen lately! An absolute must for DD...she wouldn't tolerate a bouncy chair until about 8 weeks and is only now at 11 weeks is consenting to the pram. At 2 weeks she simply would not be put down without crying, and though she's much more comfortable with it now she still likes to be carried. Especially when fussy as its very settling.

Coconutfeet · 31/05/2012 17:55

Well, it's cold and windy today, so maybe summer's over and my worries are unfounded!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. A friend gave me a wilkinet carrier today which has less fabric and could be a good solution if I find I get on with it, then I can use that when the weather's warm and the kari-me on cooler days, as I think it's more supportive. If I don't like the Wilkinet, I'll definitely look into the other suggestions.

Great.

We had a Close carrier which we liked (but didn't last long - DS was too heavy by 5 months) but it was dreadful in warm weather. (DS was a January baby so it was fine for us.)
