When do I tell anyone passing my car that my baby is now a child?!

Odd question - at what age do I change the 'baby on board' sign in my car to the 'child on board' side?

DS is 18 months. He'll always be my baby, obviously! Smile

no need to change it, just bin it

A furry dice here, a Baby on board there....I don't care what anyone puts in their windows tbh.....but the baby/child/ickybickyprincess signs have never been sanctioned by any of the emergency services as having one iota of practicality or use.

Like, Fireman Sam isn't actually going to ignore the baby if there isn't a sign is he?
But he might spend valuable seconds/minutes looking for that baby that might just have been at the grandparents that day and not in the car to start with.
And most motorists are not actually going to think "Oh, look! Up in front there's an ickybickybaby. I mustn't run into the back of this car. I'll wait for one without a baby!

The emergency services thing is a myth.

I saw MILF on board the other day Hmm

I assumed this was a joke OP!! Shock

hiveofbees · 30/05/2012 06:34

Why do you have the sign? If you want it ,get another one when you see one you like. If its because you think other people should modify their driving when they see it, or that emergency services depend on these signs then just chuck it in the bin.

Moln · 30/05/2012 06:43

Never understood by people get so riled about these signs.

Also never understood why people really think the sign is needed for emergency services either mind.

Signs on cars are just signs on cars, and it a person thinks they are smug then it reveals something about that persons attitude and not the sign owners personality.

However a large "WARNING: Parent driving liable to be distracted at any time. Keep your distance" display could come in handy...

Though joking aside as a driver you need to have the attitude in front that you need to be prepare for the unexpected and not distracted by anything minor such as a sign.

If it's important to you OP change at 2 - 18 months is a baby still in my mind

matana · 30/05/2012 09:00

You could always change it for a 'little prince/ princess on board' sign. (Yuck). Thus negating the need to tell anyone the age of your child. You could even keep it till they turn 18.

TheQueenOfSheba · 30/05/2012 09:07

No, it's 'My Little Princess' or 'My Little Monster'. Grr, I detest the girl bias in this country Angry

lovechoc · 30/05/2012 10:34

differentnameforthis I like your thinking!:)

TrinityIsAFuckingRhino · 30/05/2012 10:36

lol this has to be a joke

those things are not needed unless its a joke one and there purely to raise a giggle

Oceanmagic · 30/05/2012 12:36

Hilarious!

Just popped back to see responses. Don't some MNers get wound up?!

It was a genuine question, I put one in the car when LO was tiny, as much for the 'might be slightly distracted' purpose as anything else.

Shall now consider what every passing driver/pedestrian is thinking of me, and just how much they're judging me before I decide whether to leave it in, take it down, turn it round or leave it on baby... Smile

Peace and love

Do you also have your babies name on answerphone message - X / Y and Baby X / Y can't come to the phone right now ? always used to make me chuckle too..

WillSingForCake · 30/05/2012 13:31

Hate these signs. Emergency services don't look at them, & if your car is so badly smashed up that they can't see a child in the back, then they certainly won't be able to see a piece of cardboard.

They are unsafe as they restrict your vision, nothing should obstruct your windows.

And if you have one to warn other people that you may be distracted then you shouldn't be on the road. You're driving a vehicle which can easily kill someone - if your children distract you to the point that you can't concentrate then don't drive.

Hullygully · 30/05/2012 13:35

This is one of the more vexing questions of parenthood and you have my every sympathy.

If said infant can sit run about, feed themselves, knows all their colours, can count to 50 and speak in full sentences, which should be the case of course at that age, then you could safely call them a child.

Exactly.
