Sleeping at 9 weeks

Our 9wk LO mostly sleeps in a bouncer (which he loves) on our bed or sometimes co sleeps using a little co sleep mattress between me and DH (night times), then day time sleeps tend to be LO just nodding off wherever we happen to be (garden, bedroom, stroller, etc). In the evenings we then just take him upstairs with us to bed at 11-ish and he tends to wake up 1-2 times a night for food. I wondered whether we should be trying to get him used to his cot and putting him there to sleep as often as we can?-and whether we should be trying to put him down at say, 8pm every night in a dark, quiet place to start establishing difference between night and day? We are going with the flow at the moment as you can see!-but do we need to try to get more structured? Many thanks for any comments (-:

I think you will find there are two schools of thought here: some will say routine routine routine and others will say go with the flow.

I personally went with the flow very much as you describe, dd co-slept with me until just after 3mths and then into a crib on my bed next to me until too big for it and now in the cot next to me bed at 7 mths. As for sleeping I just kept her with me in the evening until I went to bed as we were co sleeping. It wasn't until she was about 4 mths that I started the bath battle and bed routine at 6.30 / 7.00. 9 weeks is still very early on in the whole game - she's only been in the world a few weeks and is still processing everytng around her - I would ban the word 'should' you need to do what's good for you and your baby not what others think you SHOULD be doing!

Hope that helps a bit!

I think getting them used to their cot is a great idea. I used to put DS's moses basket in it, just so he got used to the view from his bed. He would also sleep in bouncy chairs, car-seats, pushchairs ... basically he was never awake. :) I also support the idea of an 8pm cut-off to the day. Personally speaking, I would have probably gone nuts if I hadn't had that hour or two to myself each evening post his bath/bedtime.

Thanks guys - v useful! I think we might start with putting the bouncer in the crib at nights to see if we can get him used to it, and continue as we are during the day until he is a little older Smile thanks for the advice!
