Dd just almost choked on an Upsy Daisy teacup

I'm not sure which forum to post this in so sorry if I chose the wrong place.

The teaset was free with an In The Night Garden magazine. Dd is 18mo and I thought had grown out of choking hazard territory but seemingly not.

She just managed to fit the whole teacup in her mouth and breathed in the air that was trapped inside, making a seal around the rim of the teacup, if you know what I mean.

She made what I thought was a couple of weird coughing noises and then came over to me gagging on it. Luckily I managed to get my little finger behind it and break the suction but it was very scary and she was immediately sick all over the floor.

I'm just so pleased I was right there. I managed to calm her down and get her into clean clothes before I burst into tears.

Needless to say I have thrown the teacups straight in the bin and I would strongly urge anyone else to do the same.

Don't those free gifts usually say not suitable for under 3's? Did this one?

Tee2072 · 26/05/2012 09:52

That's very scary and I'm glad she's okay,, but they say 3 and older for a reason.

MaeMobley · 26/05/2012 09:52

18 months is very much choking hazard territory. Agreed with Wishupon - did it not say for 3 years +?

MaeMobley, you is smart, you is kind, you is important.

Sorry, couldn't resist Smile

Very scary indeed, hugs to you and little one! I don't need to say as i am sure you will be very careful as you have been scared half to death that even things that seem innocent and suitable are hazardous x

ellesabe · 26/05/2012 12:57

I didn't see an age limit on it but have to say I didn't look for one. Will do better next time!

Thanks Jobdilemma! Kind of you to say so.

Glad she is ok, but I agree with others I have never got a magazine which doesn't say that under 3s shouldn't have the free toys.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 26/05/2012 18:18

Very very scary!

The toys all have the 'Over 3' thing on them, which is crap really when the magazines are aimed at younger kids. You just have be selective on which ones you buy or watch them like a hawk for a few hours and 'lose' the toy overnight.

JustFab · 26/05/2012 18:23

I think most if not all comics say the gifts shouldn't be given to under 3's and they have a picture too.

You used to be able to buy a little pot from the early learning centre that you could use to see if something was too small to give to a toddler.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/05/2012 18:27

The target age for this magazine is 18 months to 3 years. So gifts should be suitable for that age range.

Gincognito · 26/05/2012 18:35

I checked the age on that exact free toy and it definitely says 3+ (19mo ds puts everything in his mouth!)

Sympathies, must have been very scary!

ellesabe · 26/05/2012 18:40

I just had a look at the magazine and it says 'suitable for children aged 18 months and above'...hmmmmm.....

OP posts:
ellesabe · 26/05/2012 18:41

Sorry, just to be clear - it says the toy is suitable for 18mo, not the magazine!

Sirzy · 26/05/2012 18:44

Even so at 18 months I would still be extra cautious those things are never exact guides. They don't go from being unsafe to use a toy one day to safe the next just because they are a 'month' older!
