Hi all! I am really enjoying delving into parenting books, and am going to start including book reviews in my blog (without wanting to plug too shamelessly, my further thoughts are here.. lostinparenthood.wordpress.com/).

I would love to get any recommendations for my reading list. So far I have enjoyed..

The Continuum Concept
Why Love Matters
Baby Led Weaning

and am also planning to read..

How to Talk so Kids will Listen
Unconditional Parenting

As you can probably tell I am at the more hippy end of the scale, but would be interested in reading anything that isn't too "one-size-fits-all" prescriptive.

Recommendations please!

Malinna

I would very much recommend "Tears and tantrums" by Aletha Solter and "Helping young people flourish". Excellent books which have a much longer vision in mind than the immediate tantrum at hand. I'd recommend it over "unconditional parenting", although this was also very interesting - it simply was not practical enough :)
Another great book is "Playful parenting"
Maybe somewhat hippy, but with Solter, I think absolutely every thinking parent would benefit from it.

Dear Malinna,
just read one of your posts on the blog you cite, on good babies -- it looks as though you are already familiar with Solter's approach - or have arrived to the same spot from a totally different angle! Congratulations, and thank you! Good reads you are pointing others to as well!
If you have any desire to take this approach further and spread it in more practical ways, please send me a personal message -- I am trying to find a footing to get more parents aware of the need to cry in a supported atmosphere!
Thanks again,
M

"Raising our children, raising ourselves" by Naomi aldort. I am finding this very interesting and helpful and wanted to post to see what other people think about it. Will definitely look up some of those others that have been mentioned.

The Baby Book by Dr. Sears. Helped me rely on my own instincts instead of ridiculous routines. It's attachment parenting, which can go to far the other way with few or no boundaries. But mostly it's just about seeing your child as a person from the start and being aware of your own and their feelings.

Also the Montessori movement in the UK recently published a parenting book which is excellent: www.montessori.org.uk/news/news/new_montessori_parenting_book_out_in_march_2012
