I am currently studying for a degree in Early Years. as part of my dissertation I am looking at chhildren attending Day Care/Nursery whilst parents work verses parents staying \t home with their children. I would very much value your views on this subject and look forward to hearing from you all. thanks

oh wouldn't say verses it's not a for and against thing is it? Theres pros and cons to both a working parent and a SAHP hopefully folks will be along soon to help with your uni dissertation

I am sure there have been discussions like this before. Have you tried searching? maybe those will help you.

Hi there, I'm a working mum (full time and also MA by day release one day a week) and I'll briefly summarise the pros and cons's for me(some will be stating the obvious) below - don't forgot they are just mine though as other's might be very different.

Pro's

  • More money
  • Increased sense of satisfaction - I work with refugees (This is just my view, I know being a Mum is equally important, but I love my job helping and supporting people)
  • Adult conversation at work
  • Having time to do the shopping at lunch time quickly without having to baby DS changed, in the car, out the car etc...etc...
  • Knowing that DS gets constant stimulation to nursery
  • Knowing the DS is mixing with other children from diverse backgrounds from an early age

Cons:
-Shattered constantly

  • Missing out on spending time watching DS grow up: this is a BIG one and I'm often sad about this and all the potential knock on effects of this.
  • Huge nursery fees.

Thats it off the top of my head but I'd love to part time in the future which is ideal.

Good luck with your dissertation!

I've done both with my DD now 3. Can you elaborate on your thesis? Are you looking for pros/cons for just the children or for the adults too? What age group? What type of childcare?

Oooh we looked at this during a recent thesis workshop for my MA as another student had picked it as a topic - the tutor told her catagorically to change the subject! In her case because it was looking at the pros and cons from the point of view of the child's development i.e are working parents potentially damaging for children. And therefore attempting to show that SAHM are better for kids.

Way too political and a whole can of worms she was told. Just thought I'd share that with you as it may be helpful to look at what your hypothesis is before starting on something too contentious (and impossible to prove) HTH (Sorry if its just irritating )

While working, studying, 3 children, mortgage, DH but no extended family support, low income, stressed! a student colleague asked me how it felt having my dd 3 in institutional care! (day care)

She was a single mother 2 older children who choose to work part time while claiming all the benefits she was intitled to as a low income family.
Please don't make WM's feel guilty about supporting their family!
Good luck with your MA!
