hi, am just a little concerned about dd. she is generally a very relaxed and chilled baby and just doesnt seem interested in moving. she sort of swivels and does a bum shuffle/crawl type move but cant actually move herself very far. not interested in cruising or pulling up or anything.

am just starting to worry as the people i know with little ones have all overtaken her in terms of motion. in everything else she is fine, says a few words/babbles etc its just the movement. oh also she hasnt any teeth yet but you can sort of see the lumps under the gum so it seems as if they are close.

is she very late for her age or is this fairly common? gp/hv etc all dont seem overly concerned bit i am a bit. also anything i could do to encourage her?

thanks for any advice.

My dd didn't even MOVE till she was 13 months, then bum shuffled till 19 months. She is 8 now and still lazy fine. Don't worry!

please don't worry. DS didn't walk until 15 months. he was just too good at getting around in other ways and couldn't be bothered to walk. Everything generally comes in its own time. If the GP hasn't asked / worried about any weakness in limbs or anything, honestly just give it time. In terms of encouragement, just maybe put things she wants just out of reach, on the sofa etc so she has to reach for them. She may skip crawling completely. Best of luck

DS2 was 14mths when he pulled himself up - cruised from about 15mths and only started walking independently at 18mths - I'm grateful for the money I've saved on shoes compared to those whose DC walked at 10mths!!

Should have added that I took DS2 to the HV at 17mths and said 'I'm not worried but.....' within days of that he got off he's little backside and started walking - the threat of a HV!!. To be honest the advice she said was right and that he would progress all of a sudden. She said only to start to be a little concerned and come back if nothing had happened at about 18/19mths.

My cousin did not walk until she was 18 months. Neither did DH's brother. They are both healthy adults with an impressive list of university qualifications. Neither has any ongoing problems with co-ordination.

My DS took his first proper steps on his first birthday but he did not talk until he was nearly 2 (no problems at all with speech now!) and refused to potty train until he was 3 and a half.

They are all different. Try not to worry. When your DS is 16 years old, nobody will ever ask you how old he was when he started to walk.

(by the way, I only happen to know that my cousin and DH's brother walked 'late' because they both had younger siblings with only a 13 month age gap, and their mums were talking about the practical difficulties of having two not walking at the same time)
