How the frig to I get DD to drink out a straw cup?

DD is 19 months and still has a bottle before bed. I am trying to stop it as I worry about her teeth, so the plan was to try and encourage her to have a cup of milk with books/bath. So, DD and I went shopping and she picked out a new cup, seems very pleased with it etc. But, it is one of those straw ones. She can't work out how to drink out of it. She is used to a bog standard tomee tipee freelow beaker thing. So, what is the trick to get her drinking out of it? (I have tried showing her and nearly puked on the warm full fat milk)

I have this same problem, so bumping in the hope someone smart will come along with the answer.

We have a few straw beakers and the straw is really hard to wash milk out of - the first time I looked properly it was yellow and fuzzy inside! I've just got a couple of trainer beaker spouts to put on the bottles and get him to have his milk before going to bed so I can brush his teeth.

Can she not just use the TT beaker instead and go back to trying the straw cup later?

Think it's just perseverance.

Ds1 took about a month to get the hang of a straw. DP taught him to blow into it first to see bubbles then he kinda automatically sucked up when he went to breath in without realising it and got a but of a shock when drink came up. After that he was ok.

Ds2 didn't even need to be shown clever bugger

Part of me just thinks oh stick with her bog standard beaker (which she takes water out of no probs, but for about 8 months handed it to me to put in her mouth Grin) but I thought making a big deal out out of her picking a cup etc would help get rid of bottle! Waste of sodding money!

I was shown a method, not sure if it's great advice lol, but it worked. Have you tried gently holding the child's nose for a second when the straw's in the mouth? Sounds horrific but it worked for us first time.

We did it by getting a normal straw, dipping in liquid and holding the end so the liquid was trapped. And popping the other end into DD's mouth and letting go of the other end. The liquid slides in. Once we'd done that a couple of times, she got used to a making the correct sucking motion.

Not sure if it'll transfer to a straw cup, but our DD learnt to suck straw using one of those fruit juice pouches that you could gently squeeze as she had it in her mouth. The result of too many trips to Morrisons cafe and realising I'd forgotten a sippy cup.
